A lady friend of mine wants me to sell her father's 3 carat single stone diamond ring. It's been appraised for $35,000. I don't know what the setting is nor the cut of the diamond. It was purchased about 40 years ago. I did some preliminary research on men's diamond rings and it seems the final bid prices are considerably below the stated appraisal values. Which leads me to wonder if eBay is the best venue to sell this item? Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks for help and Happy Holidays!

since appraised values on gemstones are usually inflated, she should not expect to get anything near that on ebay. she could try for 50-70% of that at best. she should also use an escrow service. the best thing would probably be to sell it at a local auction house.

You are probably not going to get "appraised value" for ANYthing on ebay.
OTOH, you are not going to get "apprasied value" from a jeweler who'd buy it for resale, either.
Or from a consignment sale or B&M auction house, for that matter, both of which are going to take a serious cut from whatever the sale price turns out to be.
I'd tote it around to some jewelers who sell estate items and see what they'd give for it, and consult some local auction houses as well. You can then get an idea of what you'd net using any of these venues, and compare that to your projected costs on ebay.
