How long do you usually give your customers to pay when they use the "buy now" option? I would think if they wanted it quickly enough to "buy now" they would want to "pay now". 3 days ago I had a customer buy an item with "buy now". I immediately emailed her my EOA email, but never received a response and have not yet received a payment from her. I don't get it!
Do you think putting in my TOS that if you BUY NOW then payment should be recieved within a certain amount of days would be a good idea? Everyone else who has used the "buy now" feature has paid by Billpoint before I even got a chance to email them. This one I don't understand.
Your opinions?

I've had very good response with offering free same day shipping when they use "Buy It Now" and pay electronically. I turned over several auctions last week using that offer. Shipping on my items is under a $1 anyway, so it's not costing me anything (esp. since I included the extra $1 in my BIN price).
I usually get electronic payments the same day or next day of auction close... it's the Money Orders that take weeks to get to me.

Would ebay allow you to put it in TOS that buy it now option is only available if using electronic payment options? If not, I think it should. What's the purpose of buy it now otherwise?

dthmj: I've been considering including shipping in my auctions. Since the postal rates are going up, this may be something I will start. I still have to think about that one.
rarriffle: That's exactly my point! I don't understand why someone would "buy now" but then not pay right away! (Or at least answer my emails right away!)

The same thing holds true for sellers. I bought something through Buy It Now so I could pay electronically and have it shipped right away. It took seller 2 days just to e-mail me back with payment info. During the Christmas rush, every day's delay getting an item mailed is more grey hairs!!

Relax - Some people use BIN to complete a purchase and not because they are in a hurry or want the item for Christmas.
They place their bid, get your EOA email, put it aside and eventually make an online payment or send a check/MO.
Even if your TOS requests an email response or payment within x days they march to their own drum beat.
I think that many of us who sell forget how unimportant eBay is to most people and that it ranks well below the hundred plus RL demands of each day that everyone experiences.
Nothing personal and no malice intended, it's just some people don't realize we are the center of the universe.

Ray -
My "BUY NOW" prices are much higher than my beginning bid price. For example, I had an item beginning price of $24.95 with a BUY NOW price of $60.00. It was purchased with BUY NOW for the $60.00. If they were not in a hurry for it - then why wouldn't they have just bid the beginning bid price of $24.95?
Makes no sense. And it has nothing to do with being the center of the universe.

ExecutiveGirl- Good Point! Six days into this $150.00 item and I haven't heard from joe bean yet... Contacted him and (he should take a spelling course with the money, all in CAPS no less). He'll send a check, let me know when it arrives. I mentioned to him I'll pay for the money order, deduct it from the amount. It's not looking good. Six days no response, I usually request payment in 7 working days. Merry Christmas... I'll NPB on the 10th day, for sure.

I think most buyers I know use the BIN option because they are in a hurry and had rather pay more to BUY IT NOW...not 5 or 7 days from now. As a seller, I realize during the holiday season that timing is important to my buyers. Therefore, I would make every effort to expedite shipping any way I could. Otherwise, I would go the regular auction route and not even use the BIN feature.Of course, there are some sellers who are concientious about pleasing their buyers and there are some who could care less.

I am only speaking from my experience here, but in the Pottery and Porcelain category we either Buy it Now because it is such a deal you do not want to just bid and let other people find it. It has nothing to do with wanting it right then. I have found the best deals in the last few weeks. What I don't understand is why people don't spend 5 minutes and research their items, then list them? 2 weeks ago I bought a very rare 1900 demi cup and saucer for $12. It is worth over $100. There is a ton of compeition in my categories to find the Buy it Now's first and it has been very lucrative.

Empires: So when would you first file your NPB alert? My auctions say payment is due within 10 days - but with BIN I wonder if that's just too long. I offer BIN so I can get rid of this stuff ASAP. But if it's treated like a normal 10-day auction then it's not really a "BUY NOW" sale - it's just a "BID NOW, PAY LATER" sale. Ugh.

HCROSS, it's the same in the collectible area I look in. I've snagged some wonderful deals because I got to the BIN first, and it was way too low.
Interestingly enough, several sellers DID take the time to do their research...only they misidentified what they had, and I still got a great deal.
Unfortunately for us bargain-hunters, I think both astute buyers and sellers are catching on to this technique and either making the BIN very high (no profit margin for a reseller) or getting up very early to snag the goodies.
In relation to this thread, though, this is one good reason for BIN that has nothing to do with haste or holiday expectations.

Executive girl: I've had the same experience with BIN and am also puzzled. One has not answered my EOA in three days; another wants the item for Christmas but so far, although invoiced by Billpoint, has not paid for it after several days of getting invoice. So I don't get it either--I thought the idea was to expedite shipping.

The few I've had have paid immediately with Paypal except for one ; who notified me that he'd pay me " shortly" .
I think he didn't want the bidding to go up ! ( But I had listed it last year , and was surprised that it got no bids.)
Nevertheles , it's worth more than he paid with BIN , so he got a good deal and I shifted the merchandise.
The two items I've bought with it have been shipped very promptly after my Paypal payment. I found it useful ,rather than dabbling with a proxy bid , or " watching " the item and forgetting it , or getting outbid during my absence. At least I won't get sniped !

ExecutiveGirl My NPB goes out within the guidelines of ebay. I think it's 10 days or 7. Maybe what ebay needs is another form of recognition to bid on BIN features, some other non restricting guideline or advanced form of acceptance since I see this as a shill problem or otherwise. It's a good but stolen idea from Amazon, but should be capable of being worked out. Oh! eBay brains where art thou?
So, 7 to NPB, 10 to FVF, don't care if granny had her teeth yanked out! "You owe me money"!

UGH! Defeats the whole purpose of "BUYING NOW" if you ask me!

...I am starting to see that now too......I have my shipping terms/cost right in my listing and there should be no problem with the BIN buyers sending payment.....I had 4 BIN last week and they still have not paid....one sent me two emails ten minutes apart saying they had been busy and would get to it....EXCUSE ME?? then why use the BIN?? I have to agree with some of you...maybe it should only be available with electronic payments if this keeps up....it irritates me when they click on BIN....end the auction so no one else can bid and then sit on it....grrrrr.

If you buy it now and go through and pay for something immediately without getting the sellers contact information before you pay you may get burnt like me. Now seller is unregisterable and I am out my money and no way to contact her.

jlb: What kind of feedback did this seller have? Feedback is there for a reason. I would not send someone a payment without (1) checking their feedback or (2) hearing from the seller with a total first.
I'm not saying a buyer should pay before they hear from me - I'm saying that if they BUY NOW, and once they get my email, they should pay right away for a BUY NOW item.

I have had a couple of checks from BUY IT NOW users, but most use PayPal. Most everyone has been very prompt. Some people just aren't clear on the concept.

Hey everybody...first time to the Message Board for myself. Question:
I am a seller interested in using the Buy It Now feature on eBay, however, I don't see that I have that option with Auction Watch's "Create an Auction".....Am I overlooking something here?
Thanks for your assistance...

Personally, the few times I've used the BIN option, is beacause the price is rigth and I don't want to go through the hassle of being sniped at the last second, not because I wanted the item NOW

I love buy it now. I wish I could do it automaticlly on AW listings! (Hope you're watching) I have closed several listings in the run up to Xmas and most were paid before I got the Ebay notice of sale. I love Buy it Now!

For the moment, you can't activate BIN from within AuctionWatch. What you do is launch your auctions in the usual way, then immediately go into eBay and revise them (use the link on each auction page). The revision page[s] are where you click on BIN and set it up. It's very easy, but annoying to have to take the extra steps.

Just for the record (and sorry to drag up and old thread, but computer has been out for a couple days so I'm behind!) I had four items end with BIN last week and only ONE has paid and she paid by check.
Irritates me too, because I took a bit of a loss on the items (to move 'em out quickly) in hopes that THAT money would roll in before Christmas, for my own Christmas spending, but the BIN bidders seem to be in no hurry at all to get their stuff. <sigh>
BIN is, as others have said, often just a way to claim it as "MINE", even if the person doesn't want it for another couple of weeks... they keep anyone else from taking it away.
