Many parts of California can expect rolling blackouts tonight. I'm wondering if eBay will be affected or if they will have back-up generators ready to go?

The blackouts are predicted between 4pm-8pm pst, usually for 1 hour increments.

I also found out that this Stage 3 Power Alert will be in effect until at least the 19th.

Interesting question There is a good chance that if they are rolling blackouts there computer might have back up power but they use several diiferent servers to pull ebay togeather who knows if they have back up power.

Its my guess that black outs would at the least effect only parts of ebay auctions at a time in fact its my guess that some of the outages they had where some times only one system on ebay was out may have been due to power outs in the past weeks.

These power outages arent new many businesses have contracted for lower power rates simply for lowering power use or powering down all togeather when requested too for the past few years.

now the demand for power has got so high that many company are begging out of these contracts for what they consider more the a fair amount of demanded power down time so power companies are being forced to brown out or shut down large business and residensial areas in rolling black outs to cut demand for power the state dont have to sell at any price.

so its posible ebay my have rolling systems outages if there isnt backup power at each point across its path to you or at the least lagged slower then normal page loading due to rerouteing of data to users.

Just heard on the news, black-outs should be starting at about 5PM..That is so D-N wrong, to choose this time...Why not 10, 11PM, when commute is over...It has poured all day here, making the use of street lights a MUST....5 PM, most people leave for home.

On top of that, the San Francisco-Bay Bridge closed down...Oy!

Get your candles ready....
Gosh Shosh!

Silkmoth -

They close it in high winds, because cars get blown around. They don't get blown off, but it's unsafe to drive on.

I heard on the news that some parts of west coast have already gotten 7" of rain. Good luck all of our auction buddies out that way.

Many of the sites hosted in CA will also be blacked out from the problems in CA. I have already experienced this with one of my online vendors in CA.

You would think that eBay and others would disperse their servers redundantly to another location for just such a loss of basic service. eBay should have an exact duplicate server system operating on the east coast or mid west US, that could carry the burden when major failures happen in CA.

The natural disasters that CA is prone to should make all online commerce centers in CA install redundant servers in other parts of the country. That's why the AARPA NET was developed in the first place- to allow a disaster in one region to be by-passed with little or no disruption of service.

eBay facilitates millions in business daily, and yet the problems in CA will impact us all. Not a very smart use of internet technology.

Hi, Maui! I'm ready, too. Got my UPS on, everything hooked up, and the candles (that we didn't need for Y2K) ready to go.

What kind of cards do you have? Not Tarot, by any chance?

reamond: at least CA doesn't have huricanes, major snow storms, tornados, and very rarely do we have lighting storms. CA is no more prone to natural disaster then any other part of the US.

As to one or more redundant eBay sites, Can you say "higher fees".

ebay already has mirror sites. think of the times you've gotten onto ebay and had AOHell ebay or CompuSuck ebay. AOHell is out of Virgina and don't know where CompuSuck is.

I wouldn't worry about this too much. I read somewhere that eBay's backup servers are located in Exodus and AboveNet facilities. These facilities have their own generators and are built to withstand earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and hackers.
