I would be grateful for your help,I am clueless about needlework. Can you tell me what kind of work this is..it is on a purse.

The flower is in yarn, the background is looped and curled. Someone told me it was crewel,I didn't think so, but no confidence in my ability to tell a thread from a needle.

It looks like needlepoint to me as well. I have a finished needlepoint that is about 14 inches square I was thinking of listing. It has about 6 stitches missing from the center, it looks like whoever worked it just plain missed them because the backing or mesh is the same color as one of the threads in the flowers.

Yep, that's needlepoint all right. Hard to tell from your (excellent!) closeup what the sort of chenille-y background is, but my guess is that the tent stitch is worked on a novelty fabric background. Basically a piece of scrap canvas is laid onto the novelty fabric, the needlepoint design is worked through both the canvas and the fabric, and then the threads of the canvas are pulled out, leaving the needlepoint design on the novelty fabric. (This is also done with counted cross-stitch.)
