Well, we can complain all we want, but the bottom line is: eBay is still the best site around, hands down.
If new fees will help improve the site (i.e. more up time, customer support, more bidders), then that'll be great.
I'm staying.

Once the "storm" calms down, most will end up staying. Those who leave will soon return.
Unfortunately, the hike in fees has NOTHING yo do with improving the site. It is just more money to padd thos big Execs pockets.

Staying, of course. But this means, around an extra $1800 of my money that now goes to ebaY. It would be one thing if I thought that they were now somehow providing better service. I do not think that though and I am not a happy camper.

Of course I'll stay.... the 5 cents won't kill me.
What hurts is the 10-cent fee on the 10-day auctions.
I will now have to adjust my schedule so that I no longer list on Thursdays and end on Sundays.
The most significant impact the 10-day fee will have on eBay is that there will now be FEWER 10-day auctions!

Will stay, but will cut down DRASTICALLY on gallery, 10 day auctions, etc. so that the amount I spend will not increase but, perhaps, even decrease.

Ill Probably sit here a while and lick on this here tootsie pop while long stareing and cringeing at the incresses then stop counting the licks it take to get to the toosie roll center of this pop and list some more auctions.
As long as I keep getting bids I can list but .10 cent more for a 10 day auction I dont think so if I can get the interest and bid in 7 days they wont be seeing my extra dimes.
ill just have to add another hour a week to the hour I already spend listing weekly.
For any one serious about leaveing ebay Epier.com offer fee listing up to 30 day per listing and no FVF since they dont charge no fees they dont require your credit card number to list or bid.
The bidding is less right now but there is no hand in your pocket looking for dimes.

I'm planning to maintain the status quo for now- which is diversity between Ebay, Yahoo, Pootah, & perhaps Dutchbid very soon. In the long run I'm dusting off my resume and planning to get a "real" job. I can only take so many pay cuts, and the type of item I specialize in is no longer viable.

Hi Empires!
Forget about yahoo. There won't be anything going on over there anymore in a few weeks. Since they started charging fees, the listings have gone down dramaticly. I planned to list a few things on ebay after stopping to list on yahoo, now I don't know any more. I put up a lot of books on Pootah, but haven't had a bid yet.
Might have to concentrate more on half.com. At least there is no work involved to list anything over there.
Right now I'm still considering what to do.

I will be staying, but my $1 items will probably not get listed every listing period any more - I'll have to stagger them to go with items that I know will sell to offset the fees.
Also will probably stop using the 10-day listing feature except for certain items that (1) I know will sell and (2) that can absorb the extra fees.
I also predict MORE Ebay reliability problems, because instead of having users doing 10-day listings on Thursday and 7-day listings on Sunday - EVERYONE will be doing 7-day listings on Sunday and overload the system....
WOuld love to see a discount for 3-day auctions (if the 10-day fee surcharge is for ADDED exposure, those getting far LESS exposure should get a discount, I think) - then Thursdays could pick some of the load back up...

The 5¢ is going to increased energy costs which has gone up 20% for many companies. I hope those A-holes are staying warm while they think of new ways to nick & dime us. I've already cut back 20% on time and materials for handling to keep costs down for the Priority increase. This 5¢ will just mean a decrease in time in some form devoted to customer service, probably will only ship twice a week.

Staying but in a new outfit!! No frills--all plain old 9.99 start 7 day auctions and only those that I will make a good profit on. No $1-$3 items that bring bidders in by the droves. Box lots to get rid of low end stuff. Big inventory reductions. It just is getting too hard to consistently make a profit. Will still be out looking for the rare and unusual items that bring big profits but my ebay fees will decrease. I will be running a LOT fewer auctions come February.
The fun is gone! I've loved the kitschy stuff I used to offer but there just isn't enough money in it anymore. Ebay will be a much stodgier place!
Sure would be interested in the COOP idea someone wisely put on the table. Someone is going to fill the gap and why shouldn't we get a piece of it?

Staying but cutting way back on Gallery, putting even more of my nicer stuff on my website where I don't have to pay "protection" (reserve) fees.
This month I'm also getting discontinuing cable TV. Who needs the frills when the prices are more than I care to pay?

Hi,
I started listing on ebay a little over 6 months ago. I really have enjoyed the ebay experience.
I have actually decreased my ebay costs. I used to list every item on the gallery + listing fees, which worked out to be $.50 per auction. Now, I list w/out the gallery. I still have the same amount of sales. I also used to list every item at $5.99. I went up to $9.95 last October. I seem to be selling more and having a higher profit. I closed 115 auctions in the past 30 days with only listing 231.
Ebay Listing Fee - $.25 to $.50 |
Final Value Fee - $.50 to $1.00 |
Electronic Payment Fee - $.30 to $.89 |
Post Office Shipping - $3.50 to $3.95 |
Delivery Confirmation - $.40 |
----------------------------------------
All this addes up to be between $4.95 to $6.74! Right now I charge $4.95 for s/h to cover all of the fees. Should I go up because of Ebay and USPS? My average profit for the 115 items was around $5.00 after all the fees were taken out of my pocket and product cost of course However $575 is nothing to complain about. Who would not want $575 profit for 30 days of minimal work.
So, all the fees do add up to be quite a charge. However, I make more than they do off the items that I sell. Every one gets a small percentage, but I get the biggest cut.

I only started listing recently, but so far have been successful. Coming from the real estate field, I am used to ever changing fees...so it's not a huge deal to me.
I am staying...I like ebay and I do it mostly just for extra income. Sometimes I get surprised and get a nice surprise when something I didn't expect to sell does!
I am just going to make a few adjustments to cover the new expenses...

Staying,of course. It's the only real game in town,so far. Probably move my books tho to Amazon and try dutchbid a little to make up for Yahoo going up too.
Like the rest of you, I'll be dropping my 10 day auctions, dropping gallery except for a few high end items,no frills, and doing box lots on really low end items, dropping Billpoint too.
And POSTING LIKE MAD for the next 13 days!

Interesting thoughts, jadejim. If you are doing boxlots of anything I like you'll be seeing me bid a lot more. Never been fond of by-the-piece bidding except on high-ticket items. By boxlotting, seller cuts his listing fees and most administrative costs in half at the very least.

Staying, but I too will be doing more lots instead of individual items, the 5¢ won't kill me, but the shipping is getting out of my control, with lots, it seems that it'll save the buyer and possibly bring in more bids.

Now that Yahoo! is going out of biz by their own hand, eBay is still the one to use. I posted 20 items Monday and eight have already sold with BIN. My fees or my prices will have to go up a bit, but that's life.
I might try the box lot approach to move my slow movers.

Leaving ebay over something like this would be like leaving your wife because she got a pimple.
If this nickel will affect you that much, perhaps you need to examine the merchandise you sell.

Hey guys just realize this is the first of many rate increases! If you are operating on a slim margin it is time to rethink your strategies and catagories. Ebay is a one of a kind venue that is dirt cheap compared to the real option (A brick and mortar store). Ebay won't stop the fee increases but most will stay and the ones that leave will be replaced by new sellers. Will Ebay continue to increase in size the way it has? Probably not. I wonder how many $50-200K seller incomes ebay has created? Quite a few I would bet! And, it has enabled even more people to have an enjoyable 2nd income. Good luck all!

HCQ: I know I do lots that you will like! I sell a ton of fabric and many, many patterns--not dress patterns--crafts & needlework. I aim at a market of crafters because I wish I could still see well enuf to use all this stuff. Once a fabriholic always a fabriholic--at least I get the pleasure of handling and looking at all these wonderful prints. Worst part is once I sell this stuff, I watch the bidders auctions and try to buy some back in nice neat finished items.
This is my side-line as I am a hard working antiques & collectibles dealer. However, it is rapidly becoming my main focus.
Watch for BOX LOTS!

How about high volume sellers? At minimum I run 1000 auctions a months, although it's usually more like 1200. Let's be conservative and say 1000. Twelve thousand nickels is $600. That doesn't mean I'll starve, but I'm not exactly overjoyed at having to give ebay an extra $600 for nothing in return. I also run ten day auctions exclusively. I'll definitely have to re-examine if it's worth the $1200 that would cost me. I'm thinking not.

12,000 nickels is $600, but you said you list 1,200 auctions, so wouldn't your cost be $60?
