Hi, I have sold a (very)few things on auctions. But am still confused over the picture hosting site thing.
I have posted some auctions using AW and GoTo with my photos on those sites but have also posted auctions using the photos on my computer. So why do people keep saying they need a host site when obviously you really don't need one to get the photo onto the auction.
Hope this makes sense. Since I will be leaving GoTo and don't see much sense in getting too involved with AW if they plan to start charging also, what is wrong with using the pics on my computer?

If the pictures are "hosted" on your system, no one else will be able to see them. That is why AW and other hosting sites are necessary.

Slightly OT, but somewhat related...how does everyone feel about the new fees that Honesty is going to charge if you exceed (I think) 3 MB in image hosting as of 2/15/01?

Ok, I still don't get it. Have patience with me.
I recently listed some auctions on Bidville and used the url from photo I had on GoTo. On my Yahoo auctions, photo was uploaded from my computer to Yahoo, right? When that little box comes up that says browse for photo?
So was like Yahoo "hosting" the photo? And don't all the auction sites do that? You have a choice of entering the url where pic is or browsing your file and using that one?
And if all the auction sites do that, isn't that sufficent for a small time seller? Maybe it's just big sellers that need a host site?

Yes, you are correct about the Yahoo auctions. When you browsed to the photo on your system, you then "uploaded" it to Yahoo's hosting. eBay offers picture hosting that is free for the time being. However, they also compress your pictures, so they are not very good quality.
I've used my ISP's provided web space to store my photos, and I also use Auction Watch. I've had trouble connecting to my space on my ISP's servers for some reason, that is what brought me back to AW. Depending on who you are using for you ISP, you could have space with them as well.
