Geez, I'm having a bit of trouble getting all the itty bitty details of the service understood. I put on all my auctions that I accept Paypal. I am a verified "whatever it is".
This is probably a stupid question, but if my ebay ID and my Paypal ID are different, how do they (winning bidders) know who to send the payment to at PayPal?
Do I have to tell each winning bidder who wants to pay with PayPal what my PayPal user name is?
Well, I messed up on that, signing up with my personal email address instead of my business one. Originally, I was using it to make purchases. I tried opening a second account under my business name, but PayPal won't let me use the same (my only) checking acount for a second PayPal account.
I have auctions running and looking for the smoothest way to hanlde all this. And I have two people who said they were paying with Paypal 4 days ago. No $ yet.

You can change your email address on PayPal. Just click on the "Profile" tab, then add your preferred email address on the bottom. Once you add that one and confirm it, or whatever, you can go back to that tab, and select the one you want, and click on "Make Primary". Once you do that, you can take out the other address if you want.

It is a very good idea not to use your ebay id for your paypal id. That way if your account gets restricted, you dont have to worry about folks paying you and then demanding their stuff even though you can't get the money. And when you choose to leave paypal, you dont have to worry about money still coming in. Folks have closed their accounts, put "no paypal" in their auctions and eoa letters and still get those "you've got mail" emails. At least if their PP id is different than their ebay id, they can tell the payer "don't have an account, so cancel the payment."
I would recommend that you read payment service ratings before you decide which payments to accept.

Thanks guys for your responses. Originally I thought those that complained about payPal in these threads were just sour grapes. After all I've read, I see now many people are experiencing real trouble with the service and it's getting very poor reviews.

I disagree with that strongly for 2 reasons.
1st it is much easier to have the buyer take the initiative and just pay for the auction themselves. I've had many buyers send me payment minutes after the auction is over, I didn't have to send a EOA or make any effort.
2nd and most important if I get a notice to pay to an email other than the sellers email I would be a bit reluctant to pay that. It wouldn't take much effort for some lowlife to submit a false bill, one way a buyer protects themself from con artist is to make sure they send only funds to the seller's email.

So it gets worse!
PayPalDamon, are you listening?
Back some months ago, I tried to open a new paypal account using my business email address. I already had an account under my personal email address for buying stuff.
So I got down to the place where it asks for the checking account number and won't take the account because it's the same account I have on the first Paypal account.
So I have these auctions running now on eBay, and my user ID on eBay is the same as the account "I couln't set up". I have been waiting for days for payment on my FIRST paypal transaction.
Guess where it went? To the attempted-to-set up-account. Now the payment shows completed and I was trying to figure out what the heck "file" meant, now it's "filed". That may be a goof in itself.
so, I requested to get my money. Of course, it won't let me get it electronically because it won't let me use my checking account already in use. When I tell it to send me a check, it gives me an error message of not being able "to ship to an address other than the billing address." HUH?
I don't quite understand at what point the buyer can or can't request a cancellation of the payment. I will email him and get him to try and cancel his payment.
How can I quickly close the account afterwards?
Sorry if I'm such a doofus. I just want out of Paypal after talking to you guys!

Meadowlark,
Log on to your PayPal account, click on "Profile". On your profile page look for a hyperlink called "Close Account". Click on the "Close Account, click on confirm and you are out.
I think PayPal is a helluva versatile tool and I don't normally recommend someone close their account, but I believe it would be best in your case.
To get your funds out do this, email them to your account that does have a checking account attached to it, then withdraw the funds to the checking account. Then close the accounts. It appears it has you panicked and that's not good, not for you, not for the PayPal reps, and certainly not for your buyers.
Thanks a bunch! I told the buyer whose payment is there to cancel his payment and pay at my "real" user name, and I'll give him free shipping. Then I'll cancel the unacessible account in a heartbeat. I didn't even know I had left a half-set-up-account there.

The advice from uaru was excellent. I told my two buyers that had already paid on the weird account to ignore my earlier requests about cancelling their payments. One emailed back saying he couldn't cancel anyway.
You are right, I did panic. I had auctions closing, people sending money to my eBay user ID (which was the bad account name), auctions closing with "Buy it Now" heading for the same account.
I was able to email the funds out to my other account without further setting up the checking account or a credit card (I keep only one of each). then I shut down the bad account and s far, so good.
Is there anyone out there that has used Paypal for a while with no problems?
I'm considering keeping the one account, but not advertising it anymore in my auctions.
