Being a packrat MAY be paying off...

I was hoping some magazine sellers could help me. I have 2 magazines that I saved from a while back:

1) The first is a magazine from February, 1969, called Hullabaloo. It is in so-so condition; the spine is worn abit, and there are some pages missing (pgs. 17 to 24 were ripped out which appears to be the Beatles article.) some of the 2 page picture spreads are coming apart from the magazine, but are doing so "cleanly" (not ripping).

This issue has John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the cover, with the title:
"The Beatles Now". Subtitle is "Stones' Beggars Banquet in Color".

The centerfold is a pic. of the "very" young Rolling Stones.

2) The second is a Time magazine from April 16th, 1984. It is titled: "Computer Software - The Magic Inside the Machine."
The cover is a picture of Bill Gates balancing a 4 1/4 inch floppy (remember those??) on the tip of his finger. The caption on the picture is "Microsoft Boss Bill Gates". My notes - 14 years sure has aged him! He looks like a kid there.

Magazine quality - in great shape - 1 small coffee stain on the cover. There is a subscription address label on the cover as well.

My question:

What do you think the worth (if any) are of these magazines? Would I do better (esp. with the Hullabaloo magazine) to auction off pages/articles, pictures and/or ads?

I don't specifically collect magazines for resale; these were just a couple that interested me many moons ago because I thought the were interesting.

I would be grateful for any help/suggestions any magazine sellers may have.

Thanks in advance!
Barb

Yet another magazine - I think this is the only other one I saved (wished I saved more!):

Consumer Reports Special Magazine:

"COMPUTERS: AT HOME"- Fall/Winter 1983

In great condition - tear at the top o the cover only; It is SO neat inside - all the old computers, showing setups like a TV with a CPU and a tape recorder for program loading; an "optional" floppy drive described as faster but expensive, etc.

There are several pages comparing the computers on the market with their options and sofware. It is a hoot to look at.

So mag. sellers - is this mag. worth anything? (I hope, I hope.....)
Thanks!

HI Oxford:

I don't deal in recent magazines- so I don't know if I can help with a definitive answer (most of my things are 1900 - 1960 or so).

The Consumer Reports and Time likely have no collector value. Too common, and too recent. I'm not familiar with Hullabaloo, but this one sounds like it has more potential. Collectible magazines are valued in large part by title, age, condition, and whether they have a celebrity on the cover. The Lennon/Ono cover should be a huge plus, particularly for Beatle fans. Ditto the Stones centerfold.

Unfortunately, with pages missing and other damage, it likely has little value to a collector, as well. Mags with pages missing usually have little or no collector value.

I'd try listing them for a few dollars, and see if you get any nibbles!

Thanks Steve!

Since the Hullabaloo has damage, do you think that it would bring in more $$ if I sell just pics and ads? Some of them are pretty neat, and the ads are "cool" (for psychadelic glasses, lava lamps, etc...)

There is an article with pictures with Peter Townshend, another with Jimi Hendrix, "Gretta Groupie" comic strip (2 pages), etc.

What do you think?

Thanks again,
Barb

I would frame the cover of Lennon/Ono in a nice modern glossy enameled black/gold or black/white frame bold with a wide virgin white inset. There are probably a few ads with value in the magazine, just go through and look on ebays closed auctions to see if there is one like them. Just remember that with magazine and paper collectors condition is everything so state upfront any and all damage in great detail. (You should be used to doing this with all products though! 8*)I have sold ripped covers in the past of celebs and have got some nice money for them. Like Magazine guy stated above, the others are too common....I find magazines all the time back to 1980 with no problem. Unless a magazine has a Big-Time celebrity of the now on the cover or a long time celebrity that rarely makes such appearances or if their is a big event splased over the front cover dont bother. And even then you will probably want to hold on to them for awhile.....until the market picks up and more money is being spent on these things. Also, know that buyers of such things I have found are of the upper class with lots of disposable income, so package it well and be on your tippy toes. They are more accustomed to this and if they get service they like they will be back.

I have sold many recent mags only a year or two years old and sold them for way more than the cover price. Not all were in pristin condition either. I'm sure you'll find a buyer for your mags. Many collectors would love to have those mags at a lower price and the codition you have them affords them the chance, so condition will effect your final value but still should sell easily.

When selling mags it helps a lot to give info on what pictures and articles the buyer may find inside.
