I'm working up to trying to build a website...to sell antiques. I went to NoNags...a great site...and found bunches of free HTML editors. The thing is, I have no clue what would work for someone brand new to this stuff. Most sound pretty technical.
I need EASY and understandable. I need a program that assumes I know nothing, because that's exactly how much I know...
Can anyone recommend a program like that?

toke, I believe Arachnophilia is still free. My hubby used it and liked it until I bought Coffee Cup. If it's not on nonags, it should be on Tucows.

Thanks, Snowy...
What do you like about CoffeeCup? I'd actually be willing to buy a program, if it isn't a fortune...
Is it simple?

Take a look at Note Tab. They have a "lite" version that's completely free, if you like it and want more features you can get the registered Note Tab Pro for under 20 bucks. Someone on another thread mentioned it, I tried it out and ended up getting the Pro.

Heya Toke, when you find the easiest program out there, let me know. Some day I may take a shot at it myself?

Coffee Cup is very easy, and they do frequent updates. I did a couple online tutorials, learned the tags, and I was HTMLing away, which I never thought I could do. My 8 year old is using it for her site. My hubby does some site work, and he says the only one he's tried that he likes better is Dreamweaver (pricier).

You might try the following place for not only HTML but a whole host of other interesting things to download.

Isn't coffee cup spyware? Personally I find that most of the free editors are seriously lacking. Of course, it's going to depend on what it is you want to do. If you want to create a site only has basic HTML (upto and including tables, frames, etc), then yea, I guess they would be ok. Otherwise, if you want an e-commerce site that actually works (ie: professional) , you may consider investing some money and purchase something as Dreamweaver (by Macromedia) or Cold Fusion (by Allaire) .
Otherwise, because each person is different and their learning curves are different, the best bet would be to download, install, and play with the programs. What someone else considers "easy" or "the best" could be a piece of junk in your eyes.

Hi toke. I mentioned a good FREE HTML editor called EASYHTML in another AW thread. It received an award (best program of the month) and it has help files for both the amateur as well as the professional. You can check out the other AW thread for more info on this 17 year old programmer from Finland. http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=340362&id=345512
Here's the URL to EASYHTML from ToniArts:

I agree with rosiebud. There are so many HTML text editors out there that the only way to really find one you like is to narrow them down to a few and then download one and try it out. If you're not happy with it you can always uninstall the program and try a different one.
I did a lot of downloading and uninstalling when I was looking for a good registry cleaner and I discovered what one person recommends may not be the best for your particular needs since everyone's computer and level of expertise is different. So, when you find one that looks good just go ahead and PLUNGE in!!

What about Netscape Composer?
Comes free with Netscape (It's that little ICON in the lwer right that kinda looks like a pencile and piece of paper)
No knowlege of HTML is required. Works just like a word processor.

gk4495 ~ definition of spyware can be found here.
snowyegret ~ at one point I was looking at optout and they had a list of spyware programs. I can't remember how long ago though.. and I know I was amazed at some of the bigger names that were on the list. I know Cute FTP *along with their free editor) hit me as one, and I thought Coffee Cup was on there as well. I might be mistaken about Coffee Cup but I can't verify because I can't find the list anymore. (I know I'm not wrong about the CUTE products though).

If you don't already have Microsoft Front Page Express on your computer you can download it for nothing at the Windows update site. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
I find it extremely easy to use and all I need for doing auction ads. I also have the full version and never use it.
I will admit to being a bit overwhelmed the first time I opened the program--but I do that with everything. As soon as I relaxed and played with it, I learned it quickly.

reddeer, yep, you're correct as usual.
snowyegret, CoffeCup is classified as spyware because it comes embedded with the Timesink/Conducent spyware component. You can look on this page for more details. http://www.suttondesigns.com/EnigmaBrowser/infospyware.html OptOut only gets rid of the Radiate/Aureate spyware. You should download the free AdAware program which detects ALL known spyware modules. http://www.lavasoft.de/aaw/

If you are looking for Dreamweaver, I would look through the for sale/classifieds section of craigslist.org They have a lot of web/graphic designers that sell their old HTML related software.
I picked up Dreamweaver 2 for $35 this way. It does not have all the features of Dreamweaver 3, but it is just terrific for eBay related editing.

I've used a bunch of 'em and the one I like the best is Netscape Composer. It's part of the Netscape Communicator suite.

The absolute best is Web-O-Rama. Strange name but great program. You can find it at http://www.kevingunn.com/weborama.htm
I would recommend going to http://www.htmlgoodies.com first and doing some of the tutorials there.

Thanks so much, everyone for all the great ideas...
I downloaded Arachnophilia, as a starting point. Good grief...I am totally intimidated. I'll need to work up to it slooooowly...
I haven't tried FrontPage, because I'm a Netscape fan, AND I keep reading that if a page works with Netscape, it'll work with ANY browser. Soooo...I've been trying to access Composer's PageWizard. Still no luck with that...still a dead link.
If I actually find an editor I'm capable of using, I'll let you know first thing, reddeer...

toke,
That isn't always true. The best thing to do is make a habit of checking your page in both IE & NS to make sure everything looks & works like you want, in BOTH.
I build websites & my professional package checks this for me but I always manually recheck it anyway because there are some differences.
It look scary but it's really easy to do once you take that deep breath & start playing around.

I use a combination of Netscape Composer (I'm sticking with version 5, I hear the new version 6 Netscape suite is buggy), AOLPress which AOL used to give away for free and is still available all over the place, and Arachnophobia.
Arachnophobia creates perfect HTML, and even has functions built in to fix some of the errors the others make, like screwed up line endings. But it's not WYSIWYG, you have to tweak the code, look thrugh the browser, repeat, which is intimidating.
Netscape and AOLPress are better in terms of the rough construction; dragging and dropping, creating in a WYSIWYG mode, etc. You can create a link in your page to another page that doesn't exist, then click on it and AOLPress (I think) will create that page for you (blank of course) etc. You can clone one page somewhere else, etc.
But when I'm done with them, I usually pick the page up in Arachnophobia to fix all the bugs like line endings and format statements. Arachnophobia also has a 'beautify html' function, that catches errors. Very nice.

Thanks, eventer. I keep forgetting I even have IE. I just opened it to check my auctions. Everything was fine, but I should have been doing that all along...
zzz...
Do you use the PageWizard in Composer? If so, do you like it?
I have to say, Netscape customer support has been great...both email and on the phone. There really are actual human beings there... They haven't solved the link problem yet, but at least they're trying. They have to get tech support to cooperate, I think...heh.
