From the AB

Under the current pricing structure, members receive two free pictures per listing and must pay an additional $0.50 for up to four extra pictures. Under the new pricing format, members would receive one free picture per listing, with each additional picture costing $0.15 each. As well, the price for SuperSize and Slide Show, has been reduced from $1.00 to $0.75.

Makes you wonder if it is not related to more sellers using eBay's free picture hosting now that they don't use AW?

Never cared for their Ipix hosting. Even if you have a nicely cropped and crunched photo that loads quickly, it's going to show up their size, that fits into that small box. You can't show much detail with it.

How true.
I can take better pix with my butt than what I've seen on some auctions using that genius "service".

Giving new meaning to the words "crappy pictures", my camera just fell on the floor and is ROFLMAO!

If I could just get that "gunk" off the lense I'd probably sell more crap on-line.

LOL, you guys are just way too funny!

But yes, I hate their pic hosting, it's horrible! I mostly buy clothes and I just can't see crap (pardon the pun ) with those. I wish sellers would pay heed to the gripes!

I have been doing alot of surfing in areas I don't normally check out. There ARE alot of really crappy pictures out there right now.

Ipix leads the pack in crummy pictures IMHO.

I have also seen alot of pictures apparently
being hosted by the seller's website or other
undisclosed services that don't load at all,
load so slowly that I give up, or so dark or fuzzy they are useless. labrat4gmos

Puddy do you use a fixed-focus lens or a zoom?

I believe that Kodak had a similar camera in the 50's and 60's. It was called a Brownie...

Fortunately, this doesn't affect me, but I sure am getting sick of the ebay mentality and multi-tentacled greed.

Anyway -- anyone using those ipix really ought to think otherwise. I couldn't count the number of auctions I simply had to pass on by because the photo(s) were soooooo bad you couldn't tell anything about the item. Of course, some of that was the photographer's skill (or lack thereof), but a good bit of it was the smallish size.

For smaller-volume sellers at least, PhotoPoint is great, but there are many others out there. What I like about PhotoPoint is that they make lotsa photography-related sales (prints of your photos, equipment), so may not be so quick to start charging for image hosting.

I've started doing my own photo hosting since AW announced their fees. I had been using Ebay's IPIX, but I like to relist auctions after they close to save a little time and to link the previous auction to the new one - and the pictures don't always carry over to the new auction - I spent more time emailing pictures to people because it wouldn't show up in the listing.

Now I take my own pictures, save them to my network, and it goes quite smoothly.

LOLLOLLOL!

It has both, but the only time I use the zoom is when I'm running "behind".

Add me to the consensus- I think IPix pics SUCK. The only bright side is that they did reduce the fee for supersizing. But not enough that most people will actually use it. I wonder if the new fees will encourage people to look for other options. I think most items can be satisfactorily shown off with 2 pics, but most can't be successfully shown off with only one- especially not one "crappy" one.

I am happy to have my own web space- I have all along- and it was well worth the effort it took to learn how to do my own pics.

It's a free service. One small pic is enough. Mr. Lister has an IPix option now so you can link to a photo on your hard drive. Create a bunch of auctions, then bulk upload the batch using Mr. Lister. It's pretty easy, you don't even need an ISP to store your pictures.

I remember finding the eBay seller who used their toilet to prop their mdse. Eeewwww! All the auctions...a pair of boots, a childs toy, etc., were proudly placed on the toilet. Talk about crap.

Here's how you can utilize eBay's free one picture: Take shot of all the different angles of your item, them make a composite image and upload that one file. I've gotten 4,5 or 6 different images into one file and still made them a very manageable size (60k or under)

Here's an example: http://www.auctionbytes.com/auctions/humworship.JPG

Another nice feature of the composite image is that people don't have to scroll down to see all the images.

How do you make a composite image?

george I take my pictures and save them as JPGs. Then I open them up in PhotoShop. I also open up a new, blank 700x700 pixel image in Photoshop and cut and paste all of my pictures in the new file. You have to resize the images so they fit in the new file.

I generally set the compression to medium when I save the image, that way I know I have an image that will load at a decent speed.

Hi magazine_guy:

It is nothing more than a price increase for picture hosting, disguised as a price reduction. Doesn't that sounds to you, like the Clinton aids got jobs at eBay?

If you use two pictures, before you paid $0.00, now will cost $0.15

If you use 6 pictures, before you paid $0.50 (2 free, plus up to 4 for $0.50) now you have a choice you can pay $0.75 (one free, plus 5 @ $0.15) or you can choose the Picture Pak for $1.00. To me that is a 100% increase.

It seems, as if eBay was saying that sellers love to pay higher fees?

The fees are already to high, specially for the low price items. In the near future, once seller realize the real cost of selling on online auctions, they will stop listing those low price items and that is a high percent of listings at eBay.

No one's mentioned this --

Doesn't embedding the URL for your photos (at some image hosting site) in the description avoid all this?

I'm trying to remember the html code for that. Anyone?

A nice thing about doing it this way (other than saving money) is that your photo(s) appear next to or near the text instead of down near the bottom of the page.

Hi CleverGirl:

Yes, it does. We were only talking about the new price increase of eBay image hosting.

The HTML code to embedding images in description is:

<IMG SRC="welcome.gif">

Thank you for point this out. As of now, images not hosted by eBay at least for now remain free!

Hate those ebay pics like most everyone else!
