Hi,
We're thinking about getting a merchant account for our web page, but we don't know which one is a good deal.
Can any of you suggest any companies? Rates, etc.?
I found the best rates through my own bank. I currently have a terminal that I rent, because I also have a retail location and I need to swipe the card.
My rates are based on "mail order", which means I pay a little more for the non-swipe access versus the swipe access (customer in front of you). I pay 2.95% for American Express & Discover. My Visa & Mastercard rates are 2.25% (not quite sure how accurate that is right now).
I offer both Paypal and advise I have my own merchant account in my auctions and end of auction notices. I find more people use my merchant account rather than Paypal.
Most items I sell are high ticket antiques, so it is just a cost of business for me. If I were selling less priced items or didn't have a retail location, it wouldn't pay for me to have the Merchant Account.
Most companies I checked out on the internet were extremely expensive. However, if you do decide to use one of them and they require you to have a terminal, find out which terminal they want you to use. Then check out eBay for used terminals - you can buy them alot cheaper on eBay than what these companies want you to pay for them.
