I just got a note from a buyer about using the 'buy it now' option and she said:
"Oddly, I had to put my credit card number into e-bay when I purchased this item. Do you have some sort of automated billing set up? This never happened before."
I checked the eBay message board, nothing about the credit card. I can see where this could be a problem, having the buyer think that they already gave their credit card for me to charge them.
I read something about this the other day but can't remember where it was, and didn't read it fully.
Has anybody have a clue as to what this is or how I can find out?

here's the 3/05/01 posting on the eBay Announcement Board...
Pay particular attention to the Buyer and Seller segments!
*** Buy It Now Feature Changes ***
Based on your continued feedback, we are pleased to announce several improvements to eBay’s Buy It Now feature. Please be aware that the improvements to the Buy It Now feature will likely not be fully functional for a couple of days until the feature changes have been completely released to the site. Below is a description of the changes being introduced starting today:
- New seller requirements - In our continuing efforts to make eBay a safer place to trade, we are introducing new seller requirements in order to list an item with Buy It Now. We will be requiring that all sellers have a minimum feedback of at least 10 or be ID verified. To learn more about our ID verify program, visit the following URL:
http://pages.ebay.com/services/buyandsell/idverify-login.html
- Enhanced buyer requirement - We have improved the credit card on file process associated with Buy It Now. If you choose to purchase an item immediately with Buy It Now, you will need to have a credit card number on file with us (no charge) or be ID verified ($5 fee) in order to be able to purchase the item. If you choose to place your credit card on file with us, your credit card will be used for verification purposes only. If you wish to pay via credit card, you can submit the same card to pay through eBay Online Payments, or you may choose to pay for the item using another payment method that you and the seller agree on.
- Reserve listings - For listings with a reserve price, the Buy It Now price will remain until the reserve price has been met, after which it will disappear. This change stemmed from your suggestions of keeping the Buy It Now price until a "successful" bid has been placed. Please note that this change on reserve auctions will not be completely functional until we have fully released the feature change, which may take several days. For non-reserve auctions, the Buy It Now feature will continue to disappear after the first bid has been placed.
- Mature Audiences category changes - To eliminate abuse of Buy It Now through the potential sale of infringing items, eBay will no longer support the Buy It Now feature for mature audience items. Our commitment to minimizing the potential abuse of the feature will help reduce the Trust & Safety costs of maintaining the feature on eBay.
In addition, over the next several months, we will also be supporting the Buy It Now feature for eBay Motors and for eBay’s International sites.
