I am really fuming! Someone disgruntled over my s/h charge (that was stated clearly in my description...and again when they got a notice from auctionwatch) sent me an encrypted email that took out my password and I had to input my TCP/IP again!(Which meant I had to call prodigy and it took about 45 minutes for it to be restored)

All over $1.45!

Email was innocent enough...but when I hit reply and tried to send my polite answer to them it wouldn't go anywhere!

Seems even though I THOUGHT I was connected to the internet the encryption had told my modem I wasn't I guess...?

How did this get by ZONE ALARM?

Grrrr...do I have any proof to send to ebay?
Thanks
Carole
PS: Her feedback is good..62 positives (although her previous IDs are hidden for some reason)and 1 neutral.)

ENCRYPTION does not do that! What you got was PERHAPS a malicious email with embedded modem strings ... but that only works once and can't take out your TCP/IP settings. If you close the emaiil and reboot, everything should be back to normal.

And Windows CAN lose the TCP/IP settings ... mine does it poeriodically.

UH ... let me guess ... you use MSOutlook or MSIE to read your email? You have NEVER upgraded with any of the security upgrades oput out by Microsoft? There are a few nasty tricks one can do in email that slide right by ZoneAlarm because the holes Outlook and MSIE are too gaping.

Well, I'm confused.

I've never had a problem sending or receiving encrypted e-mail, even with my cr*ppy li'l WebTV. According to the info available from the two different services I've had experience with, it's a means of securely sending an e-mail when you want to be sure the recipient gets it. I used it when e-mails to my brother were bouncing, and the encrypted one got through when the regular ones didn't.

So I'm not sure how your bidder's use of encrypted e-mail would have caused your password problem.

As for previous IDs being "hidden for some reason," you can check on previous IDs by going to eBay's Find Members page

http://cgi3.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MemberSearchShow

and following the directions there.

I easily checked the ID history of a seller I'd done business with in the past, and all IDs dating from her initial registration showed up.

However, if any previous IDs included the user's e-mail address, you will not get the full ID, just "[email protected]." This has to do with eBay's recent changes about e-mail addresses and privacy.

I'm not sure why your bidder's previous IDs would be an issue though. Since one's feedback from any prior IDs is carried over if and when one changes one's ID, what does it matter if she changed her ID?.

Simply changing one's user ID doesn't eliminate old feedback. (When I checked on that previous seller mentioned above, I was able to see her feedback all the way back to her first eBay transaction.)

The only way to "lose" feedback is to start all over with a completely new registration.

I'm not sure your bidder did anything more here than object to your S/H charge. I know it's a PITA when bidders do that, especially when sellers spell it out in their auction terms, but I don't know that it's something to report a bidder for.
