I wish I could, but I don't use Outlook Express, so I can't really give you any detailed help. You're welcome to my generic fix-all advice that you just read, of course, that may even fix it.
Having 7 kids (going on 8) and one income, I use cheapo freebie email Juno.
I'm sure some other east coast geek will be around to help. There are others around here who are just as talented as I in terms of PC help (just not as good looking nor with as much personality...).

Thanks for quick reply...When I get it fixed, I will be back to learn more from you about Freebie sources. Since I mostly just like to 'tootle' around on the internet, the 20.00 permonth charge is an extravagant cost to me at this point in my life. I think there should be a Senior Rate !!! (73 now and still having fun!!! Dana 71 (been here 2 years now)

I wanted to thank captainkirk too! I posted it on my thread, saw this one and thought I would post my thanks here too!
I am sure glad everything is working now! It was no fun trying to read ads with 1/2 the letters missing. I was never good at "guessing" games!

Dana, post the details of the error you get when trying to open OE. Knowing the exact error will help in figuring out the fix.

ah, good, meya is here..not that I'd ever admit it in public, but I suspect she knows more than I do about computers.
Dana: I will trade you, or anyone else, all my "secrets" about freebies for one lead on a cheap source of toilet paper..having, as I do, 7 members of the female variety in my household. I'm thinking of negotiating directly with Scott Paper for a tractor trailer load delivered right to my house every month. heck, their paper mills are in maine, I'm in vermont, should be simple enough. Or maybe i'll start hijacking a load now and then as it heads down I-95.

Dana
The easiest thing may be just to click on "Windows Update" while you are on line and if you do not have the latest O Express and Explorer upgrade to it. You will not lose any of your mail and it will "repair" missing or damaged files as it upgrades. If you are already running the newest version, I believe if you go to ad/remove programs and elect to remove it, the install program comes up and one of the options is "repair" the current install to its' initial state. None of these paths should damage your settings or mail files, but it is safest to back these up anyway.
All of this assumes you have damaged your current installation and not installed something incompatible on top. If the later is the case that program may not work after fixing Explorer. Some notable Windows assasins are AOL and ICQ.
When you double click on Microsoft Internet Explorer you should have an option that says "Fix Internet Explorer". Choose that option and you will be asked what you want to fix and Outlook Express should be listed. Just choose THAT option.
If you don't have the option to fix IE when you double click on it in your ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS then just cancel because you don't have the IE tools and continuing will uninstall Internet Explorer which I don't think you want to do.
The other thing to look at is the amount of disk space you have free on your computer. If you run out of space Outlook Express will not work. Go to MY COMPUTER and right click on drive_C and select properties. You'll see a graphic showing your disk and the amount of space being used. If you have less than 1/2 free space you may have to delete some programs in order to gain more free space because your swap drive isn't working properly and this will cause Outlook Express to stop functioning.

Thank you all for responses....I have an answer to my problem I couldn't believe!!!
I was recently, automatically transferred to a different ISP....someone there changed my password to my username prefix and since it was set up by them, I could get 'online' here or on my new ISP, but my Outlook Express still had my original password and wouldn't work!! I hope I explained this properly..... I was instructed to change my pswd in Outlook to the way they had it and all is well.....but I sure changed my pswd ASAP!!!!......Thanks again, Dana71 P.S....I had over 30 Emails (some JUNK)before it was done and that's a lot for me!
Goingslow..PS PS..I'm going to print out all the above suggestions for future reference

Hi dana71. I'm glad your solution was an easy one. I recently helped a friend try to fix their Outlook Express mail program because they couldn't get into it and their problem was low disk space. Believe me, you don't ever want that one!!

siddielou. How do I know if I have IE 5?
I get a notice of that invalid kind too, but don't know much about how to solve these problems without worrying I'll get into more trouble. Can I just follow your directions for self healing ? ... I printed them out already in hopes it will cure that Invalid Notice. Dana71

For IE (and most programs) the standard is that the version number can be found by clicking on HELP -> ABOUT (program name), and then it should have something like Version 5.00.123.4556
In this case I have IE Version 5.00 (the rest of the numbers relate to the refinement of the version).
There is often a lot of useful info in this "about" sections.
