can't say I've ever run into that problem. However you can get around it with editpad. It's better than wordpad and it's postcard ware I've used it for 3 years now and never had a problem with it.

Are you using Win95 or 98? You can try replacing the .exe file, but it is different depending on which version of Windows you are using. They are small files, and you could find them on the net somewhere, or I could email them to you.

Greetings all!

Try the obvious first - restart the machine, clean out your temp files, empty the recycle bin, etc.

If that doesn't cure your computing woes and you are running Windows 98 (and possibly ME) check for corrupted files by:

1) START-PROGRAMS-ACCESORIES-SYSTEM TOOLS

2) Select SYSTEM INFORMATION

3) Under the TOOLS menu select SYSTEM FILE CHECKER. Click okay. System file checker will check your system for corrupted files and .dlls

4) If corrupted files are found you will be given a chance to reinstall the correct version by inserting the product cd-rom in your cd drive and selecting either repair or reinstall. You will need to have your Windows CD-ROM handy. There are some .dlls that are not on that disk (any related to word pad should be) and you'll need to figure out which cd-rom you need. You can skip over any corrupted file by clicking IGNORE.

Let us know if this doesn't help. I can look through my books and go through the database at work in the morning.

Good luck,
Sid

Hi Susan,

This same thing happened to my wordpad last year. Did you try shutting down your system and restarting? I did that and it has worked fine ever since. It is the easiest thing to try first.

Have you tried restarting your system? Someone could email you the wordpad.exe file, but you have to be able to rename the original file, and save the one into the correct place on your computer. It belongs in the C:\ProgramFiles\Accessories folder.

If you do a Find on your C drive for wordpad.exe, does it find it?

That is almost always the sign of a corrupted file - its still recognizable (somewhat) as an executable file, so windows tries to run it, but something is screwed up so it can't run it successfully.

So yes, the options presented above are the right ones:

1. shutdown, reboot, scandisk

2. use a different program, at least so you can get finish whatever you are working on now.

3. reload/repair the program, since its helpful, for various reasons, to have a working wordpad around (but probably not 100% essential if you can't). Win95 doesn't have that handy "fix corrupted file" program, so you'd have to either reload win95 totally (not as bad as it sounds, depending on how customized your system is), or try to selectively find/copy files until you had copied the right file (most likely to be wordpad.exe). I suspect if you post your email addy someone would send it to you, it would probably work.
