Hi,

Maybe I am nuts to be upset, but in my mail today I received a MasterCard Debit Card from Paypal linked to my Paypal account asking me to activate it!!

I had heard they were going to offer a debit card, but had no interest in it because:

1. I don't trust Paypal for a second.

2. I never keep money in my Paypal account.

I had no idea they were going to generate debit cards and mail them without customer's permission!

I'll be distroying it, but the cost of producing and mailing all these unwanted debit cards could have gone toward improved services and a reduction in fees!!

What a waste!

I got mine in the mail today also. I did not ask for it either.

I also was under the impression that we had to click on buttons on the website to have it sent.

Oh well.

Really, people never ceases to amaze me.

First, everyone complained that they couldn't get the funds from their account to them fast enough.

Then, there were PayPal checks sent to them. Took 7-10 days. Not fast enough. And they charged a fee.

Then, wire transfers to their checking accounts. Took 2 to 4 days. Faster, but I won't give them access to my checking account! Period.

Now free, immediate, trouble free acces to you PayPal funds. But I didn't ask for it!!

Geez....

Debit cards are hardly trouble-free -- and consumer experts and advocates routinely advise against them and recommend regular ATM cards instead.

You have to guard a damn debit card with your life. If your purse or wallet is stolen, the thief can use a debit card to empty your account -- and never punch in a PIN or show ID. And since it's not a credit card, you're out actual money until the fraud protection process runs its course.

A lot of people don't like debit cards and don't care to carry one.

For those who have read the fine print and know the details...would this give a crook access to the funds in the paypal account only...or, access to any bank or credit card we have listed with Paypal?

Those magnetic strips can hold alot of information.

Don't sweat it! The cards are not useful until activated on the Paypal website. If you don't want it, simply cut it into pieces and throw it away.

The debit card has really changed the way my PayPal history log looks.

Payment from jane doe $XX.XX
Payment to USPS $XX.XX
Cashback $X.XX
Payment from john doe $XX.XX
Payment to Sam's Liquor $XX.XX
Cashback $X.XX
Payment from john public $XX.XX
Payment to BP Oil $XX.XX
Cashback $X.XX

I can get payments Friday afternoon and by Monday there's hardly any funds left to move. I've spent them (with a lot of help from my wife).

different strokes for different folks.

That example alone is plenty reason to forget this card, unless you're going to use it expressly for business. Then, it would make sense for the bookkeeping feature. Otherwise, it looks like a tax time nightmare...sure, lets show the IRS every single thing I bought with these incoming funds.

yeah, right

I've already run afoul of the IRS, the thing they seemed focused on was the income I didn't declare. They never asked me what I did with it.

Start accepting only cash and burying it if you are concerned about the IRS.

Come on now, can't you just imagine being audited and having to show all your paypal records... anything that isn't obviously business related is going to be a headache trying to explain it and lead to even more questions.

I've always heard and read, the best thing to bring with you to an audit is exactly what they request and no more. A record like that can leave very little choice.

I've got an advantage over you I don't have to imagine it, I only have to remember it. I walked bowlegged for 2 years after they got through with me.

I definitely would avoid the debit card if you felt it would give you protection from the IRS. Sometimes the illusion of safety is all you need.

So don't activate it - but don't cut it up. In a few years it will be a collectable. I have a bunch of priceline cards I am saving also.

Any reason Paypal can't just mail out payment to sellers in a form accepted at banks: checks, money orders. I would happily jump on the Paypal wagon the minute they did it, and be quite happy to pay a reasonable fee for the service.

Hi,

Thank you for your comments on the debit card. I do apologize that you were offended by the card being sent automatically, but request for the item has been heavy enough that qualified users were offered the invitaton to activate one. The card will not be activated without your requesting it on the web site.

As it relates to the card issues and the impact on the account---I would like to add that the only action the debit card could impact is your PayPal account. Credit card or bank account information on file is not impacted by the card. All transactions require that the user sign on to the web site and request it (save the debit card, which is PIN activated)

Users had requested a faster way to withdraw their money (besides check and bank withdrawal) and this is the quickest option that could also have the benefit of possibly netting you cash back.

Thank you for your comments and concerns. Please feel free to direct any questions regarding this product, or our policies, in the Partner Services forum.
