Hi, I just received a strange e-mail.
My auctions ended last night and I sent notices to all the winners.
I just got a weird e-mail. It was from a Harry Wilcox- no subject-
e-mail me with how much i owe and where to send money and i will send payment-
No auction #- no mention of what he won.
Beside the e-mail was a paper clip. I clicked on the paperclip and it stated happy99.
Is this a virus? I remember reading something about this happy99 before.
I did not open the happy99 file and immediately deleted the file. Am I too late or have I caught it in time? Thanks, Lauren

Hi Lauren,

Happy99 is a worm, rather than a virus. If you did not download it and get the fireworks display you are alright. I was a little confused about how it came to you though. In my experience, I have usually received an email from someone, then a blank download email from the same person. They don't know that they are sending it. The worm attaches itself to your outgoing email and sends itself. If you know who sent this to you, you need to let them know they have it. Hope this helps.

Anne

Hi, That is exactly what happened! I received two e-mails back to back. The first one had the message with the paperclip and the second was blank! Thanks, Lauren

You might still want to make sure that this worm didn't infect your computer. You won't know it and it will be sending itself to everyone you send emails to. Here is a great page with tons of info on this worm. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/happy99.worm.html

Be sure and notify the sender of that attachment, and send them a link to a fix and imformation. In all likelyhood, they are unaware that they are infected.

One other thing you might want to do...Update your anti-virus protection regularly. I use Norton and really like it. I once used McAfee and I prefer Norton. When I get infected emails I get a pop up box immediately asking me what I want to do with it. I delete them period.
