Ok it's a rumor. Yesterday at the post office the clerk mentioned that USPS wants to sub out the window clerks department to Mail Box Etc. or similar. Maybe this had to do with the recent ratings of the clerks, carriers etc. But what riddles me is the request yesterday for restructuring the Post Office? ( Anyone hear what the ruling was? ) So, how would you feel about sending your auction items through a second agency rather than the USPS at their buildings? I'm miffed on this too!

I don't know how that would work in my community. My post office is in the middle of nowhere! Tiny town with a church, country store, about 10 houses and the post office. I don't think Mailboxes Etc would come to my town to run my post office as they would starve off the revenue there! I'm just afraid the PO will be closing some of these little rural post offices and then force us to drive 20 or 30 miles to a major city post office.

I already ship all my items via USPS out of a local copy center. It is called a Post Office Express center. It is the best deal in town as there is never a line there. I used to go to the P.O. offices and regularly wait more than 30 minutes to ship.

Didn't I read something recently about UPS buying out Mail Boxes Etc.? Someone bought them out.
Regarding a post office sub/express station: We have many post offices, branch stations in our town and we also have a few of the express/sub stations at a mall near me.
Granted there are no lines, but I know why, they charge more than the regular post office on everything (postage, rates, insurance, DC, etc.), because they are subcontracted by individuals.
Went there once to use them and have never been back!

The Post Office Express I go to does not charge any extra fees. It is the same fee structure as the normal Post Office. It is full service and I even have a USPS P.O. Box there.

My daughter works as a clerk at a convenience store in Florida, similar to a 7/11 or Quikee Mart. She runs the postal substation there. The cost for shipping from the substation is the same as it is at the post office. I talked to our local post office clerks and they said that the USPS loves this sort of setup because the public receives counter service without the associated salaries and benefits that would have to be paid to USPS personnel. My daughter has customers who come to the store to mail because of the back up at the regular post office. She does hundreds of dollars of business every day. Many of her customers are commercial mailings and eBayers.

How does your daughter make money from this? Does the postal service pay her?

Hi Commentary, She is paid by the retail chain and not very much. The Post Office does not pay her at all and I guess the retail chain is paid for providing the service but all the money goes to the store and the salaries of the retail clerks are poor. Most salaries in the Southern US are markedly lower than the Northern area.

Well - that explain why the USPS loves the service. No cost...I guess the chain makes money from the extra traffic.

The people running the Postal Express offices are not doing it for free. I know the people that run the express in a local copy shop and they get a percentage of every Post Office sale and they are very happy with it.

That is actually kinda sad
Your daughter does a $13.00+/hr job for not much above minimum wage.
Sure USPS loves this kind of stuff. Those folks who do their jobs for next to nothing are almost always great nice local folks. Since she is knowledgable to all the postal stuff she should take the postal exam and get paid properly.
The post office counter could be a lot more efficient if they would quite chatting with everyone in town. Have you noticed that everyone in line knows everyone of the counter clerks and they chat beyond the amount of time it takes to weigh packages or sell stamps while everyone else waits in line for their daily chat with the counter clerks as well. I have lived all over the country from big cities to small towns and its the same everywhere.
