I recently bought a few of these at $30 a pop, supposedly they sell for much more when they are authentic. Many on eBay have a serial number on the inside, but I can't find anything like this on mine. I'm afraid I may have been sold fakes! Anyone out there with any knowledge about these?

Thanks in advance.

All original Dooney & Bourke Purses/handbags have a number on the inside stiched to the product
They also have a lifetime warranty with the manufacturer at $30.00 you quite possibly have the fakes
I have 2 originals and they were not $30.00 more around $300.00
I hope this helps

Bummer... And I thought I had a deal. They were at a Garage Sale and the gal said that her father got them for cheap. I checked them on eBay and saw how much they were selling them for and quickly bought them. Too bad I didn't know about the authenticity thing...

I have an older original D&B that does not have the number inside, it never did. mine cost $185.00 new and $60.00 for a change purse to match.

with D&B you can tell the real from the fake by the quality of the stitching and the feel of the leather, plus the number inside is usually there

if her father got them cheap though, probably fake

If they came from a Dooney & Bourke factory outlet store, there's not a number inside that I can find! I used to live near one of their stores, bought several bags there, and I can't find any numbers in them!

There are many counterfeits in the market and some are very good. Look for label inside with serial number.

I bought a purse and wallet for $500 at Dillard's. I was told that all would have the serial number on the inside and the little hangy thing on the outside with the brass like duck. Heather

It should have a serial number.

Another thing to look for -
check to see if the stitching on the little leather label with the duck (right on the front of the handbag) goes all the way through to the inside of the bag. Is it actually stitched on? A lot of the fakes are made to look like they're stitched but are actually glued onto the bag.

Dooney & Bourke ...

All Mexican border towns have 100's of street vendors selling D&B products that are knock offs...They sell at around $10-$15 bucks...Soooo, a person could take a short trip to say, Algodones(near Yuma AZ) and bring back $400.00(customs limit)worth of D&B, Rolex, Tommy H, Swiss Army, etc...
(they all look as good as "Real"

Buyer beware...!!!

The real ones also have a white tag on the inside that "says made in the USA". The lettering is either red or red and blue.
Before I knew anything about them I had a few on ebay from an estate sale on ebay. In my description I said the bags didn't have any numbers or tags on them and that I purchased them at an estate sale and didn't know anything about them.
Ebay didn't end my auciton but I did get a warning. They said that just because I claimed to know nothing about the purses I was still responsible for authenticity.

I have seen tons of knockoffs. The older Dooney & Bourke did not have serial numbers, but there are some things that will alert you to a real deal.

The more recent Dooney & Bourkes have a white cloth serial number stitched inside that says "Made in the USA" and when you turn it over, it has the serial number.

Genuine Dooneys are lined with smooth leather--not the rough type.

Any Dooney & Bourke that has a "Made in China" tag (like I recently saw in GW showcase) is a fake.

OK, so now that I have $120 invested in these four (probably) fake purses, what should I do? Should I say that they are probably fakes and just list them on eBay and take a loss or what? Just FYI, the D&B emblem is sewed all the way through with yellow thread... It didn't look to be done very well. A couple of the purses appear as if a tag has been cut off, but I'm not sure. I can find no tags inside. The purses do seem to be very nice though.

$120 is a lot to lose for me...

thank you nofishing, my Dooney & Bourke is older, bought at an authorized store. I have even had to send mine in for repair

I dropped it and skinned the ducks bottom, had to have it redone.

the older ones do not have the inner tag but they do have the outer duck on the hanging leather tag

Circuitmatter: Ebay won't let you keep the purses listed if you say you don't know whether they are genuine or not. I've already been there-- done that. They ended my auctions and sent me an email threatening to do all sorts of stuff to me if I did it again.

If they are not authentic Dooney & Bourke,
it is a crime to sell them -- by law they
cannot be sold and must be destroyed.

Have you considered contacting Dooney & Bourke
and asking them how you can verify that these
are authentic bags? I'm certain that they must have
some method of dealing with this as
their bags are widely counterfeited.

You can contact a Dooney & Bourke customer service representative
by calling 1-800-347-5000, 9am - 5pm (EST), Monday through Friday
or fax 800-326-1496, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
You can also email customer service at [email protected].

Hope that helps!

Has anyone sent in an older one to have it reworked? Mine is 5 years old and I really need to have something done with it. Heather

Check out the shoulder strap. I have 3 real ones and they all have really heavy shoulder straps. The fake ones are thinner, usually have no brass hardware and generally look fake. This is the easiest way to tell for me. I have gotten so good at spotting them that I annoy myself trying to "spot a fake"

The bright yellow stitching that you mentioned tells the tale of a counterfeit. I've seen Louis Vuitton with yellow stitching too. What a drag for you

Heather, I've sent several in over the years for refubishing. They will send you a postcard and ask would you rather they try and refurbish if the condition isn't too bad OR they will keep the purse and give you half off anything in the catalog up to the value of the purse you sent in. You can choose a cheaper item but it's still half off and they won't refund the difference. I think it's a GREAT deal, buy one D&B and the rest are half off.

Ketzel,

If they must be destroyed and it's a crime to sell is true... What do you recommend I do with them. I was thinking I could go back to the garage sale where I bought them and ask for my money back and explain how it is a crime to sell them. If they refused I could threaten to contact the authorities and turn them in...

Would I get my money back you think?
I didn't get a receipt when I bought them!

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Dooney & Bourke customer service and they said there is really no way to tell if the bags are counterfeit over the phone. I told the gentleman that I spoke to that there are no tags inside and the Dooney & Bourke emblem is sewed on with yellow thread, and he said it could be authentic, because some of their purses don't have tags and some DO have the emblem sewed on with yellow thread.

I'm not sure what to do... I already put the auctions up for them this weekend stating that there were NO TAGS inside, I didn't really know much about the purses, and they were being sold AS-IS. I thought maybe that would cover me.

Any thoughts?

If they must be destroyed and it's a crime to sell is true...

It IS true. If you want to do the right thing, send them in to D&B to have them authenticated. If they are real, sell them. If they are not, you can either toss them and coll it a loss or take it up with the garage sale seller.

You can threaten them with contacting the authorities if you think you may need to, but it's unlikely the authorities would do anything over such a small dollar amount.

Now here is the thing, if you send the handbags in to D&B and they are fake, you will not get them back. So maybe you want to approach the seller BEFORE going to D&B.

I know you don't want to get burned with this buy, but to sell something that clearly is illegal to sell and to think you can CYA bu using a disclaimer is one of the biggest problems with eBay. There is too much counterfeit merchandise being sold on eBay and buyers who get burned may not come back to buy again. Then YOU have become part of the problem, adding to the online auction fraud.

If these purses are counterfeit, Dooney and Burke will not return them to you if you send them in for authentication. They will destroy them.

In my area, I've seen an increasing number of flea market and garage sale folks who typically sell used old items throw a few bogus Tag Heuer, Cartier, and Swiss ARmy watches in amongst the old stuff and say they're not sure if it's real or not. Yeah, right. I've seen some "Ray Bans" thrown in too.

They figure an unknowing person will take a shot at it and think they might be getting a deal and they make more dough.

I'm sure that garage sale vendor knew full well they were fake purses. Who would sell them for $30. knowing they are real?

Donate them to the Salvation Army or Goodwill and get a receipt for what you paid for them. Seems the only way to recoup anything at this point since ebaY will nuke the auctions if you list them.

Not Kerryann on eBay
