I am relatively new to Ebay. I only have been a memeber for 3 weeks and have a 2 rating.

I won an item (10postcard lot) recently and feel as if the seller is trying to take advantage with an overvharge for shipping. Unless I am imagining it due to inexperience.

I had sent him an e-mail after I won and here is a copy of it, followed by his response (which set me to thinking).

Hello,

I am the winning bideder for your postcards. Item# xxxxxxxxx. Please le tme know how you do things, since I am new to Ebay and am still learning the ropes. Thank you for putting these up for auction and I anxiously await your information so I can send payment.

(the reply)]

Congratulations on being the winner! The total due is $9.99 for the postcards and $5.00 for priority mail shipping. Insurance will be an extra $2.00 if you want it, also because your new, I have a $3.00 surcharge so you can be on our mailing list for future updates on items for sale.

The total without insurance (which we do recommend you get as we are not responsible for loss or damage) is $17.99.

Please send to:
xxxxx
xxxxx
xxxxx

Thank you.

I know I am new, but this seems odd. Am I off base here? Please give me your opinion.

It depends on exactly what was said in the item description.

And what option was checked with respect to the shipping charges. i.e. Buyer pays fixed cost, or buyer pays actual postage, or whatever.

But in any case the $3 carge to be on his mailing list is ballsy, don't pay it.

You need to look at what the auction said. If it said $5.00 for shipping then that is what you pay since you bid on the item. If insurance is optional then that is what it is, optional and it is up to you.

The surcharge, I doubt that was in the auction description so you can tell S/He to forget that.

If the Auction said exact postage then remind the seller that 1lb Priority with conformation is $3.90 or if they weigh 2 lbs (lots of post cards) remind them it is $4.35.

Were the charges included in the auction? It is a bit excessive to ship 10 postcards priority mail for $5.00. The 1 pound priority mail rate is $3.50. Personally I would never ship postcards via priority mail. I consider it too expensive.

$2.00 is almost double what insurance should cost, and the $3.00 surcharge is bogus. Some sellers ask if you would like to be added to their mailing list but would never charge for it since it is to their benefit as much as yours.

Unless all of these charges are stated in the auction (in that case you wouldn't have a reason to complain), it sounds to me like this person is attempting to take advantage of a newbie and deserves a rather harsh negative feedback...

What did his TOS (terms of sale) say about shipping? If the $5.00 for priority mail was in the listing, that's what you should pay.

$2.00 for insurance sounds high, the post office charges 1.10 for the first $50.00, and on a $9.99 item, I think I would decline even that (the post office doesn't lose enough packages to pay 1.10 to insure a 9.99 package, unless they mean more than that to you, and even if they do, you would only collect 9.99)

A $3.00 surcharge because you are new is pure bunk (unless this was also in his TOS, which I highly doubt).

Here is an exact copy of his TOS:

"Winning bidder to pay postage and handling charge. Insurance is extra. Payment should get here in 7 days or item will be relisted and negative feedback registered."

That's all.

He did not clarify his "handling" fees for a reason. I would email him and request a reasonable shipping rate, as he did not clearly state it in his listing, if he won't, respectfully request an option to back out of the transaction due to him not being clear in his listing and his more than "questionable" fees. Normally, I would tell you to bite the $5.00 shipping because you should have asked ahead of time. But he is apparently an unsrupulous seller to attempt to take advantage of you because you are new, and I would be concerned about receiving my purchase in the first place. No matter what, I would report him to ebay along with ALL emails involved, and leave SUPER negative feedback. You are new, so you don't have a high enough rating to worry about feedback, just switch user IDS. Please don't let this discourage you. Most sellers are genuine, you just have to take the time to read the terms and ask questions if you have any! Good Luck!!

When did this auction end?

Someone's not telling the whole truth. I have to agree with jrb3.

I think this new member has been around since 1998 and has a fb rating much higher than 2.

At any rate, no don't pay to be on his list but pay the shipping as requested if it's listed in his auction. If you agreed on shipping and handling, you have no options. The handling is the gotcha! Insurance is $1.10 flat rate and that's up to $50. He's making money on that too.

Well if this is for real and if you intend on continuing on eBay, you will find it absolutely necessary to email sellers with such TOS before bidding.

The key words being "handling charge". In this case the seller could justify all the charges except the "mailing list surcharge".

I would probably email him, I would pay his charges even though I felt they were excessive, but the surcharge is out of the question and just like his TOS, I would expect the item in 7 days from receipt of payment or I would leave appropriate FB.

hey, tea4u, I also checked your ebay bidder status. Don't see any postcards, and I see a feedback of 33. Are you using different names for ebay and aw? Or are you a phony killing time?

The shipping charges seem ok, but that extra $3.00 is crazy. You don't have to pay that UNLESS it was stated in the auction.

Auctionwatch should post IP address next to USER ID this would clear the trolls out.

You can change your ID but not your IP at least not as easy.

But it dooes bring up a longstanding problem...

"you will find it absolutely necessary to email sellers with such TOS before bidding. "

Why should that be necessary? It wouldn't, if ebay had a rule (another rule!) such as:

seller may not charge a handling and/or materials fee unless (1) "plus handling and materials" is stated in auction, and such fee may not exceed $1.00 unless the amount is stated in the auction OR (2) it is included in a fixed shipping charge stated in the auction.

Their shipping terms are excessive. If these charges weren't clearly stated in the TOS, email the seller and let them know of your dissatisfaction.

A $3.00 fee to be on their mailing list. Completely rediculous. Tell them your buyer name is worth $3.00 and to call it even.
