My post office told me that any item that is in a box cannot go first-class regardless of the weight. Is this true??

Total BS! Find yourself another post office and file a complaint about the first P.O. There is no reason to put up with this kind of ignorance.

Typically, the PO worker is an ignorant doofus.
From the USPS web site: "Any mailable items may be sent as First-Class Mail. Each piece must weigh 13 ounces or less. "
I just returned from my local PO to discover that the ignoramus overcharged me on an envelope containing a thingy that was 1/8" thick. He charged me an extra 11 cents becasue it was "non-machinable." Truth is, anything under 1/4 inch thick is ok!
I guess to work in the PO you take a test that's scored like golf.

file a report with the post master general, there is currently an investigation into price gouging at many branches, and depending on the outcome of the investigation there will be a class action.

hockey-feathers. I send small boxes weighing less than a pound first class mail all the time. Maybe this postal person has had too many boxes drop on their head and suffers from a brain dead condition.
