The ceramic molds you are talking about that make the figures you want to paint will not help you. They come in two or more parts & are held together with straps. Liquid slip (clay) is poured into them & they are left to set for a short period of time so the slip can begin to harden where it comes in contact with the mold. The remaining slip is then poured out & the mold is left to sit overnight, when it is opened you have a soft clay hollow figure that is then left to dry out. After that you clean it by removing the seam lines from the mold & then it MUST be fired in a kiln as it is very soft & would crumble if you put any kind of pressure on it. There is no way around this if you want to work with ceramics & stains. You HAVE to buy fired pieces.
You could look into "plaster of paris", which is poured into one piece rubber molds & left to harden. You then peel the mold off, let it dry completely & then paint the figure. These pieces are solid, not hollow inside like ceramics &
they are never fired. You will not find much of a variety in plaster of paris though,
and there is no comparison between the two.

I'm afraid you are stuck with buying fired pieces if you want to do ceramics.

mcjane: Do you know where to get supplies for making rubber molds? I want to cast some fairly large items (about 12" x 12" and need a flexible rubber molding material so that I can cast in plaster and have enough flexibility to get the item out of the mold. Any suggestions or pointers would be really appreciated.
