Do you suppose other auction sites or companies would purchase our customer email lists ?
Or perhaps we might just give them to other auction sites ?
In any event, database your customer lists.

Sounds like a fast way to get your customers PO at you.
Considering the fact that your customers will start receiving dozens of unwanted emails (SPAM).
Since many people use an auction email only for auction business, receipt of SPAM may have them inquiring as to the origin.
I personally would email the sender requesting source of email.
If I found a seller had sold my email address I certainly would never buy from them again.
If it was a large amount of SPAM I may even decide to see how much SPAM I could send to the seller who sold my email. You would be suprised how many hundreds of emails can be sent by signing up someone on various adult web sites.
Are your sales so slow that you need to resort to such a low life form of profiteering from your good customers?
Before isolating your customers you may also want to consider the fact that email addresses last time I checked are selling for around 1000/$1
Try MLM business or maybe a chain letter both are slightly more respectable and more profitable then selling emails of your customers.
Haven't you read any of the threads about people outrage at the thought of web sites selling their email address'?

i've got the email addys of all the people who've bought from me, but i'm very very careful about emailing them myself, let alone giving their addresses to anyone else.
a number of buyers have requested i email and let them know when i've got new stuff up. if i were more organized, i might have started a list of them, as they requested . right now, without going through the contents of all the emails, i'm not sure who asked and who didn't. so i've sent out alerts to buyers i've got a pretty good idea are interested or requested to be notified. even still, i feel like i'm spamming the ones who didn't specificially ask. last thing i want to do is offend them.
so i'd say selling your customer list would be a bad idea.

If I were on your customer list, and found out you sold my name to another, I would no longer be your customer! I HATE that! AND I would request you and the "buyer" remove my name from your list, and do my shopping elsewhere.
Bad, Bad idea!
(and I buy and sell.....protect my customer list at all costs!)

I don't think there is any way they would know who passed along their email address.
But would you do a mailing if you were to start selling at another site ?
Would you do a mailing if you opened your own sales site ?
Under these circumstances it wouldn't make any difference if they got PO'd, because the alternative is they wouldn't be buying from your new venue anyway because they wouldn't know about it.

It is very easy to track where your email address was obtained from.
To find the originator of the email look at the from email or the Headers if you're really good then simply request from sender where the email was obtained.
Most services will provide this information. I myself have done it (on both sides). I discussed in a previous thread about working for a company that sole purpoose was generating SPAM and usable emails.

reamond, I can't even believe you seriously asked this question. I'm so angry right now that I'm not going to say anything else until I calm down other than you've just showed me a good reason NOT TO BUY anything online.

Hey folks- the information we compile is used by the other venues to market and make money.
You're going to upset the same percentage of people no matter what you do.
Ya'all better start thinking like a business if you want to stay around.

We could start a seller's information co-op. Anyone that provides 1000 valid buyer email addresses gets to be a database member/user.
It would be a very valuable tool and database to rent out to auction sites and other venues.
Just having the database would give the co-op a lot of muscle.

What an absolutely horrible thing to do to people who have done business with you in good faith.

Yeah, I know. eBay, AOL, YaHoo, and all of them do it and their memberships just keep going up.
Yeah, it's so horrible people are practically standing in line to have "it" done to them.
