Hello all

I am hoping one of you can help me. I have an old board game called "Auto Racing Game". It is manufactured by Bradley's, and has a number 4289. The cars are painted tin, and the board, box and spinners are all cardboard with printed paper glued to them. I don't know anything about it, but I can tell this is an old one. Do any of you know this manufacturer (is it possibly Milton Bradley)? Here are some pics of it:

Thanks in advance.

I couldn't find anything on this game, even using Copernic to search. I would suggest you contact the corporate people at Hasbro (they own Milton Bradley products) and see if anyone there has information on their vintage games. Their web address is: http://www.hasbro.com.

OFF TOPIC: what kind of camera do you have? These pictures are great.

Thanks for the info. I am using an old Sony Mavica FD-7. This is the REALLY old one that came out before the FD-73 and FD-93. Bought it used on eBay for $350

Wow, that looks really old, just look at that race car.
Also interesting is the name Bradleys.
I'll bet it's fairly valuable & looks to be in very good condition. Where did you find it? Lucky you.

Purchased it at an estate auction. I bought the lot for an antique wind up tin train, and the game was in the box. I am having trouble identifying the maker on the train too. Any takers on that one?

an old copy of "Toys & Prices" magazine, 1993, on board games does list the "Auto Racing Game" as made by Milton Bradley. There are two listings for it though - 1925 and 1930. there is no info on how to tell the difference between the two issues. the earlier version is listed as being worth almost twice as much as the later version. as the magazine is almost ten years old, the values they give are probably meaningless. the article did say that of early games, Milton Bradley is worth less in general than games by other manufacturers (ie McLoughlin, Parker and others). this too may have changed since the article was written.

fyi re board games in general: "first known board game in 1822 ... " Milton Bradley began making board games in the 1860s. the later part of the 19th century is called "the golden age when game boxes and game boards were adorned with incredibly beautiful detailed color illustrations." Parker Bros began in 1883.

hope this helps

Thank you for that info, squeeky! Very helpful!

Just out of curiosity, what sort of prices did this magazine give for the board game?

And since you seem to know something about old toys, any ideas on who the manufacturer of the train is???

i was just coming back to give you the prices listed ... realized that even 10 year old/pre eBay values might give you an idea of what to expect for the game:

the magazine lists 3 ratings: "good" "ex" "mib"
1925 85 145 225
1930 40 80 120

i have not a clue if board game prices have gone up or down in the last few years. it is too bad that ebay isn't able to keep closed auctions available for more than 30 days for price evaluating like this.

the train ... sorry, not a clue ... while vintage toys is an interest of mine, the field is huge, and i've only concentrated on a few aspects of it.

You are my new best friend, and I thank you very very much. You probably just saved me from listing it incorrectly!

Now, if only I could tell which version it was.....

I don't think it's an MB game.

Milton Bradley has always been known as Milton Bradley to the best of my knowledge. I have seen MB games from the 1800's that say "Milton-Bradley" as opposed to just Bradley. Although I don't state this with any authority.

Additionally however, MB game number 4289 is Quiz-Me, Game of Numbers.

Again, perhaps they use them over. But given this it's probably not an MB game. At least that's my guess.

I can show you a picture of a 1930's Milton Bradley Auto Race Game and it's not yours. Simple race game for 2, 3, or 4 players. Each player has a small metal car with wooden tires. Players spin to determine the number of spaces they move. Numbered spaces have hazzards and rewards. First across finish line wins.

I'm not sure how to insert html in this message so I'll put it on my server if you want to look at the box cover.

Interesting....

The concept of the game is identical, however, in my game, the cars are all tin (similar to the Monopoly car, only a thinner, painted tin) It is a simple race game for 2-4 players. There are 4 spinners included, however there are no hazards or rewards.

Could it be, perhaps that these are the 2 different versions of the game?

Do you know of a game manufacturer called BRADLEY'S ?

squeeky does the magazine you were referring to have pictures of this particular game?

I just noticed......Isn't it a bit too ironic that in both games, the car looks almost identical, and they are both #12 ????

Hmmmm.....

There certainly could be different versions, but again Milton-Bradley and Bradley's are probably different. Note the 's' as well.

I have never heard of Bradley's games, but I'm no expert on games.

So how do you post the pictures? I understand img src in html, I just don't know how to do it on AW.

Hi Tim99

AW uses UBB in the Message Center. To post an image, use the following (deleting the $):

Links are the similar - just substitute url for img.

Hope this helps!

I can't find anything regarding a publisher named Bradley's either.

Oh well, it's 2 am. I give up for tonight. If anyone else has a suggestion, please let me know!

Thanks to both of you for your help!

no, no pics of either game (it is a price list for a long list of games).

that Milton Bradley used just "Bradley" in early years isn't mentioned in the articles i flipped through ... but neither did it mention that there was another manufacturer by the same last name. my money is on it being a Milton Bradley game.

at this stage, all i can suggest is making a trip to your local Barnes & Noble or etc, and taking a peek inside a toys/boardgame price guide book

off to bed now

revvassago - The maker of the train is "Yone", and I am pretty certain it was made in what was once called "Occupied Japan" - that's about all I can tell you. Thanks to a little 4 year old, I am learning more and more about trains! Hope this helps....
