I have a nagging suspicion that the top bidder on one of my auctions is a phony who bid without any intention of completing the transaction.
How would you handle this?
I did email the high bidder but did not receive a reply. The bidder is a first-timer and he jumped the bid from $11.00 to $54.00. Strange, I think.

A lot of that depends on what the item up for sale is. I think I would have given the bidder the benefit of the doubt on this one.

I thought that one time, too.....had a PUZZLE (springbok - 500 pieces, only a couple years old, so maybe even still available in stores at the time) and the high bidder kept bidding the amount up against HERSELF.
I finally emailed her to find out why she was doing this? She emailed back that she was going to be out of town for a few days and kept upping the price because she wanted to be SURE of winning it, as she'd bid on others recently and kept getting outbid at the last minute.
The puzzle ended up closing at $36, she won it, and she paid - no problem!

I think Loosecannon is right. There had to be proxy bids in for it to go from $11.00 to $54.00.
And Mar30-I had to bid against myself on an auction not long ago. It was something I had promised my son and it was ending while I was away from the computer. Nothing like having a bidding war with yourself. LOL
