We picked up a second (used) computer the other day and we have been fooling around with it.
For the first time I looked at one of my actions with the second computer and my auction photos really look ghastly on it. The colors are too intense and the contrast is too deep. I cannot seem to adjust the monitor any better than it currently is (cheap piece of junk?). It reminds me of the computer monitors at the public library. Grainy, colors too bright, low detail, etc.
Anyway, I process the photos on the other computer, so they are geared to look as good as I can make them look on that.
Are a lot of people out there seeing what I'm seeing on the second computer? If so, it could explain some low bids recently!

LC ...... I always wonder the same thing about my pics. My pics look slightly washed out on my folks monitor, but look rich & crisp on mine.
BTW - Last time I looked at your auctions was a couple months back, and your pics look great on my monitor.

Good question..my gateway monitor blew up about a month ago and i slipped in a ibm to use for 3 days till my replacement came. All my photos looked way too bright on my auctions on the ibm moniter ..i suppose my gateway was getting dim and i was brighting my photos in my software to compensate..Glad you brought this up..i think i will email about 4 freinds of mine and ask them what my photos look like to them.

Well blow me down!
Joy fixed it! The picture quality is almost 100% better now.
The adjustments on the outside of the monitor did not do the trick. She went into the "control panel" then to "My Computer" to the "Desktop" and then to "Display" and then she was able to adjust the color and pixels.

I had wondered about this very thing a while back, after I checked something on one of my auctions from my mother's house. The pics looked fine on my monitor....so dark on hers that it was completely unacceptable. So I checked on several people's computers after that. Roughly 25% of the computers I checked on had my pics way too dark and the others were fine. I'm still not sure what to do about it.

We personally have 5 computers - 2 at home and 3 at our antique shop. Monitor sizes vary from my 19 inch monitor at home to a 15 inch one being the smallest at the shop.
NOT only do pictures appear different on different monitors, but it also depends on the light and/or color setting on each individual monitor, this is something each individual user can adjust on their personal monitor.
AND the browser you are using makes a GREAT deal of difference. Internet Explorer is capable of more color ranges/hues, etc., than Netscape, and therefore, an item will appear from slightly to greatly different in color when viewed on Internet Explorer as opposed to Netscape.
If you use FrontPage, it will check the differences for you between Internet Explorer and Netscape. If you get a number of complaints about your pictures being too light or too dark, you might check your own monitor settings compared to another computer – often we get a complaint, check the item on our various computers, and determine that it is the customer’s computer settings not our picture which is the problem – OR it is the customer’s computer settings and they are also using Netscape which can vary colors greatly from what you see on I.E. We exclusively use I.E. as our browser.
For example, we use a soft, pink satin background on a couple of ads, but when viewed via Netscape the background is a boring beige.
There are many reasons your photo’s can vary in color and clarity – check your browser, and your own computer settings.
We have multiple web sites, and use a system which not only tells us the number of hits to the site, but the day, the hour, AND THE browser used, among a multitude of other things. 99% of our hits show that the visitor is using I.E. as their browser, and we have been tracking this for 3 years. Therefore, we have all our ads set to reflect their best via I.E. We sell an enormous range of items via web sites, from men’s sporting items, to 1800 Stain Glass Windows, Coke collectibles and European Cut Crystal, so I am sure that the statistics which we are getting cover the gamut of users on line. If the high majority are using I.E., we are certainly going to set our ads to reflect their best on I.E. and just hope the rare Netscape user will find them pleasing enough to also make a purchase.

Me too.
I've often wondered about that.
I've had e-mails asking if that was the true color of the item.
I always responded that on my monitor it was, but I can't speak for your monitor color as I'm sure it depends on your settings.
I've never had anyone complain about it being the wrong color.
When I edit my pics I always view them in IE before I finish and I always have to end up lightening them up. As they show darker on the internet then in my edit program.

I think this is an interesting discussion. I would like to see LOOSECANNON's auctions on eBay. But the LOOSECANNON on eBay has no auctions. What is the connection between the name here and the name on eBay ?

Pictures can appear different for any number of reasons... Nuthin' to get too concerned about.
In Browsers I actually prefer Opera. Its free, its so much faster and ore stable than nutscape or MSIE its like night and day.
Its not just an MSIE knock off like many built with Visual C or Visual Basic. Opera is a ground up browser and its just fantastic. Cant say enough. www.opera.com
Back to the grrraphics... More than likely the old PC is in a 16 bit video mode, 256 color or 32,000 or even 65,000 color mode where you probably scanned at 24 bit (16 million colors or higher).
Nothing to do with the browsers at all.

Well gee, I think my bat was pictured just beautifully! I smile and chuckle everytime I look at it, especially since it's current home is over my mother's recliner!

I really miss the bat ;( that I lost on. But, I'm in the process of moving, so if you put the broken bat up in September, I'll be happy to bid on it .
And, your auction pics look great on my monitor with IE5
