Would like to hear some feed back on what buyers like concerning pictures in listings...where they can be placed, how many, etc.
Thank you.

i like em along the side of the description but its not mandatory, just make sure they are CLEAR and put as many as the item needs to fully show it and its flaws etc......

Operating under the assumption that "one picture is worth 1000 words", I put most of mine on top...hopefully, potential customers will be so impressed with the item, they'll read the description and bid like crazy! I've also put the pics down the left side...read and see at the same time. I do like the "wrap around" options, though, on the new AW templates. You can play around with the listing and go with what looks best. Good luck and have fun!

Just re-read initial post...you were interested in what BUYERS like. I'm mainly a seller so I'll be interested in what buyers like, too.

When I'm out to buy, I personally like the pictures on top. That way, if I like what I see, then I can scroll down to the description and TOS. If it isn't, I'm out of there quickly.
I am not thrilled to have to scroll down 16 times to see if it's what I wanted or not.

As a buyer, I don't really care where the pictures are. I am more interested in quality pics and, hopefully, more than one and from different angles. It is especially helpful if there is a close up pic of that "minor flaw which does not detract".

As a buyer, I like the picture at the top too! First thing I see and as already posted if it looks good....I'll read EVERY single word of the add
Sooooo, be sure your picture is clear!

If you put them ANYWHERE but the bottom be sure to use the Width and Height designators in the IMG SRC html
Otherwise your text will JUMP down every time a photo loads and this drives me NUTS trying to read it.

As a buyer,I don't care if they are on top, bottom, or side. I do wish sellers would give some thought to the quantity and quality though. I have seen auctions with three or more almost identical views of the item. This slows down the loading of the auction for no good reason whatsoever as there is nothing on the third pic that can't be seen on the first. I do appreciate a close-up of anything relevant. As Gerald mentioned, a flaw, a different view, or makers mark is often important to me.
Lastly, images that load quickly are important. If something catches my interest while browsing, I will click on it. If it is going to take two minutes to load, however, I am not going to sit and wait for it. I'm outta there.

When I look at an auction, I prefer to have the pictures at the side. At the top is next best. I *hate* auctions that have the pictures at the bottom of the listing & having to scroll down (often through loooooong text) to see the item.

I just thought of something that really "bugs" me...having to side scroll to see the ad! For some reason some templates with side pictures end up waaaay to wide for my screen. I usually give up cause I get dizzy reading and scrolling sideways!

what capotasto said!

I am amazed at the number of auctions where this happens - what are people thinking? You can't see the pictures, because they haven't loaded yet, and you can't read the description because it is jumping! I hate that more than just about anything I come across in listings.

sulyn1950: That's a good one. People who don't know how to format for the web and attach a picture that came from their digital camera or scanner. You get to scroll for three minutes to the right to try to see it all. "Attack of the 3 foot thimble"
Keep in mind that ebay is limiting the number of inserted images. I believe the allowable limit is 2. This is often overlooked but if you have a nasty competitor they can try to get you cancelled. Now, this is actual image files. I just combine multiple views into one image file. Just resize so they're large enough to see well and not too large.
When I create this file I place the images in a vertical format with the description text to the left and the pictures on the right. That way the buyer can read the text and look at the item without the need for any scrolling.

Where is this restriction to be found?

What??? I have not heard this - are you certain, and can you tell me where this is posted on eBay?

I thought that limit was just for their service. IPIX?
That doesn't mean AuctionWatch I hope. If so,
I am screwed. I like to show front, back, bottom, major flaws, etc. Two pics won't do it for most listings.

There is no limit to the number of pictures you may use. See eBay listing policies which are silent on this point.

I think the confusion comes in because ebay's photo "service" (and I use that term loosely) offers you one image free and then you start paying.

Of course, you all realize this is probably on ebay's "to do" list somewhere in the future. First pic free, others cost, no matter who's the provider.

Like others pointed out, it definitely doesn't cost more money to add more pictures (from eBay non-photo at least). But it does make our auction take a lot of time to load!

Hmph, guess I'm in the minority, I prefer the pictures to be after the description. It gives me something to read while the pics are loading.

That's why side placement is good. You can read the description while the picture is loading. Actually, if the picture is the right size...not too large... then everything will appear together right away.
I usually place my pictures on the top and keep the size small so that they load immediately.
I agree that bottom placement is the least desirable place.

another minority vote here, and for the same reason.

while i like the idea of the side-placed photos, all the ones i've seen are too-large files compressed into a small size. i've always wondered about that.
never have seen a page that appears together right way. that too would be nice.

I don't care if they are at the top or bottom. I hate it when they are giant (over 400x400) pictures that take forever to load. and then when the pic shows up it is their logo. aaarrrggh That really frosts me. I don't have the patience to wait and usually end up hitting the back button. As a seller I put them right after my description and before my TOS. It is a natural break for me. Regardless where you put them, pictures are essential. If there are no pics, I don't look much less bid.

I usually start out my description with an opening paragraph/line about the product. Then 1 or 2 pictures, side-by-side. Then I'll finish off the description and put a couple more pics if I have more than the initial 2. Then a closing blurb, then my TOS, etc.
