Lots of posts lately have been targeting bidders--deadbeats, late pays, etc. I'd like to pick on sellers (of which I am one, btw). I have in front of me five auctions that I won from 3 to 6 days ago. None of these sellers has contacted me. I know this is vacation time and not everyone uses an automated winning bidder notification system. However, if a seller is on vacation and can't respond to winning bids right away, that should be stated in the terms. There's always a suspicion--when one wins something "for a steal" (way under its value) that the seller is purposely not making contact. I'm going to be more blunt. I think it's downright tacky not to contact a winning bidder within a couple of days. A question: If the seller takes PayPal and states the shipping in their ad, do you send payment without hearing from them first?

I won an item last Saturday, no email from the seller by Monday afternoon, so I emailed them (NOT a habit I like, but sometimes a necessary evil) I did hear back later that night.
Seems like some (and read SOME) sellers are getting real lazy bout contacting buyers, especially on lower end items...

I can relate to you feeling that way about a "steal" - I was very tempted to make up some story about something I felt would have sold much better come fall.
But karma won out and I shipped the item resolving to save all really good things for fall in the future. You never stop learning in this business.
I contact within 12 hours 95% of the time and the other 5% is within 24 hours. If you paid me before I contacted you, I'd send you a thank you with details of the transaction, and ship to you on my next ship date - which is stated in each auction.
Sorry to hear about your vacationing sellers - put them on a list, and buy from me next time! (I ship daily in Nov & Dec)

i've had some buyers who've done this. i love it! would i do it as a buyer? if the seller's feedback was good, sure.
when i was green, and a buyer only, and i thought it was somehow rude, or not ebay etiquette, to email the seller before s/he contacted me

I have been doing ALOT of buying on ebay this summer and getting some pretty good deals.
I have never seen such lazy sellers. Sometimes I had to contact them two or three times. It does not start a transaction out on the right foot, I can tell you.
I was very hesitant to send cashier's checks but I did. Only one seller shipped the day after it was received. Others told me they were too busy or on vacation (after the fact).
You know the old truiesms about deadbeats, somebody died, someone had emergency surgery, someone lost their job, THOSE are the excuses I am getting from sellers.
Haven't been handing out very many positives.

7 days have passed....still no word from my seller. I've emailed several times and called - left a message...still nothing. Now I don't know if when I do hear I dare send the money. Will I wait til 2002 to get my item? Just doesn't make sense. This person is ok according to the message taker, but she's "real busy". Darn, so am I and spending way more time than I should be trying to pay for something. JUST A SIDENOTE: THIS ITEM WAS A REALLY GOOD BUY. MAYBE I'M BEING IGNORED BECAUSE OF IT.

Same here! I won (stole) a mis-labeled widget and it took the seller almost a month to get it to me. I for sure thought I would hear that it had been lost or something after they found out what it was really worth. After a couple of weeks of no show, I e-mailed them but didn't hear anything from them, but I did eventually get my package. I didn't leave them any feedback, though.

Maybe the sellers are ignoring people, but then again...I had 20 auctions end once, in one hour. It was the same hour my computer crashed.
I do not know what others do at a time like that. I went to the library and contacted as many of my buyers as I could in the hour that was aloted me to use a computer. Got about 15 done, and went to find another computer and finished withing 4 hours of the auction endings.
Am having problems keeping my computer running lately. We have excessive heat and humidity. So maybe your seller has a computer problem.

I might be missing something, is this 2 days or 9 days?
9 Days I understand, 2 days over a weekend your getting pushy. These are p2p auctions not b2p although I understand many business are there. Relax a bit and if you need it sooner just go to wal-mart, they are 24 hours.

I like to send my EOA notice first because I put all the information in the subject line and then request that the buyer use this email to answer. Believe it or not it works.
I don't mind if someone who won my auction to notify me first, in fact if they use the BIN I am alerted before ebay will send the notice. I mail the next day or if our mail comes early enough I will mail the same day.
If I was going to be on vacation I will not list auctions while I was away even if I needed the money to live.

I do not post in my auctions that I am on vacation. It is like saying
Hey world - I am gonna be away and I have a really cool computer and some other neat stuff you might want to steal.
Sorry - it happened to me once. NEVER AGAIN!

Then again... I send out emails today... 12+ hours after auctions ending, still no EOA from Ebay... you know, not a one of the people have replied to me yet? This done about 8 hours ago?? Oh yes, this done as I am the seller, not buyer.
So, do people generally not respond until they receive the EOA?

It is usually the BIN buyers that contact me.
They say I have just purchased your widget with the BIN and need your information. This usually happens just after they bid. I really like that because as of yet ebay has not sent a EOA from early today

Thanks to all who responded to my post. I've learned a lot. So Becky--are you saying that you listed being on vacation in your Ebay ad and somebody burglarized you while you were gone? But I thought the only people who could possibly have your address would be past and present auction sellers or winners, and they'd also need to reside in your part of the country. Sounds like this would be rare, and that you were truly unlucky. If you could elaborate, I'd appreciate it.

eBay's best with me so far was 2 DAYS after the auction ended. Two eoa's showed up and I didn't remember having any BIN's running at the time. Then I remembered that I was short two eoa's two nights before. My confidence in eBay soared to new heights.

Interesting as I'm a seller and I've had the reverse problem. The bidders are not responding to my EOA letters.. I've also had a problem twice in the past two weeks where my server will not talk to theirs and the only way to get in contact is through Blue Mountain Cards...
Many of my bidders send payment via PayPal and Billpoint right after the auction closes - before I send the EOA notices. I state the exact shipping costs in most of my auctions, so they have all the info. Personally, I love it!

Becky,
Sorry to hear that!
Because we are in and out a lot w/horseshows, I do have a section on my AboutMe page which states if we are in or out that particular week. But, I also add that my husband and the doberman are at home, they just aren't allowed to respond to email.

I'm wondering, do you ever buy again from sellers you have liked the item and service? If buyers do repeat buying when they have a good experience with a seller you would see better service.
Most sellers don't sell the quanity consistant enough to gain a loyal following, what incentive do they have to provide faster service?
We don't live in the moral society of the 50's, the "Shoulds" went out with 60's. I'm glad for progress.

Any seller who takes more than a couple of days to respond is not really in business. A transaction is business...it's not part-time, not a weekend or a vacation or a sick day. Short of an emergency, you should be responding even if you can't get everything settled. This is called courtesy, something that is in very short supply.

Why do sellers put up auctions when they're going on vacation? I think that's rude and unprofessional (even if ebay if just a hobby for that seller). What is it about their stuff that couldn't wait another 5 days?
