I found a seller who is a competitor of mine, who says this (in so many words) right in his auction description. To paraphrase, he says something like "my items are premium 110%, most of the other sellers offer inferior product".

The thing is, what he says could be true about some sellers, but I think it's a crappy way to do business. I'm sorry he feels he has to say this to be competitive.

Oh, and he has 2 negs to go with his 163 rating. One of his negs is for selling a piece of junk! LOL

If you can't sell something on its own merits or by the level of your own service, you have a problem. I frankly don't care about most of my competition. I try and improve my own business.

Sounds like this guy has too much time on his hands.

I totally agree with mballai:
I am too busy to worry about how others are wording their ads. I try to honestly describe and let the item sell (or not get bids) on its own merit. I find knocking other ebayers' items petty. (The exception is info to honest buyers who may be scammed. eg: The louse who sold a Playstation box, no system, just box and worded the ad to imply that the bidder was getting the system. BTW it went for about $500)

I was recently researching a book and ran across a seller that put down every other book seller on E-Bay. He was the only one who had the true 1st editions, and you were a 'yahoo'to look at the other listings.

I was very turned off by it. The seller however was getting higher prices than others for the same books.

How low will some people go?

I've seen my competitors brag on how they don't sell "seconds" or "overstocks".
I use that to my advantage and advertise that my books are cheaper BECAUSE they're flawed. Pay full price from them or buy from at less than half list price.
Your Choice.

I just have to ask this. Why on earth would anyone pay $500.00 for a Playstation?? Even if there had been one in the box, they still overpaid! Heck, my son has one-if it brings $500.00-it's for sell. LOL I do know one thing-you can't hardly give away Playstation games.

Susan,

I think that was way back when this Playstaion was new and hot. They were bringing big $$ back then and one guy pulled a scam and sold the Playstaion box--with nothing in it.

Just my luck-a day late and a dollar short.

Slamming the competition is one of the things that usually makes me hit the "back" button.

This is a very common practice. There will be 5 businesses selling the exact same product and all of them will claim that their product is superior to the competiton or unique.

The legal term for this is "puffery". Interestingly enough, nobody can be held to prove statements of puffery primarily because it is known they are inflated and biased. Name a major corporation who doesn't use puffery in their advertising. It's the "mine is better than yours" because some guy named Bob said so mentality. Don't take it so hard.

Thanks avaloncourt,

but I didn't take it too hard. I found this one to be kind of humorous. I doubt he's hurting me any with his claims.

I'm reminded of a George Carlin skit ... That's all I want out of life, a little place to put my stuff.

Well, that's good. I have to deal with people like that in my line of auctions. Some write absolutely horrible descriptions and wonder why nobody bids. Others choose to attack fellow sellers in their quest for a sale. I just choose to have the most professional looking auction page and make sure every important detail is presented in the information.

Just keep in mind that 100% of my buyers chose me for this item.

And who could ever forget that 4 out of 5 dentists surveyed... said they had no interest in my competitor's product.

I sell computer RAM and I do make comments about my competiters. They sell no name crap made in China. I sell the american stuff. I pay more for my stuff than they do so I have to give a reason why mine is more expensive. Most people think that RAM is RAM when it is clearly not. People don't understand why one stick of RAM costs $10 when another guy has what appears to be the same. I get the same thing with flat panel monitors. People send me an email telling me they can get a no name 15" at Fry's for cheaper when I am selling a Samsung for cheaper than anywhere else. Don't even get me started on Digital Cameras. That is the worst place to be. People send stupid emails telling me they can get the same camera for $200 less than I am selling. Never mind that that company has a real bad rating at bbb.com and resellerratings.com for selling gray market stuff.
