This post may or may not be against AW rules. If it is, let me say I am sorry in advance.

My question concerns image hosting at Ebay. I really don't like the little picture at the bottom. I have been looking around for solutions. I have recently gotten myself a new website. I got an email from them a little while back that says members can use their website for online auction images.

My question is this... If I decide to use my website to host my images, will my images show up on the auction listing? Or will there just be a link that a person would have to click on to go to the image?

I know this question has arisen before when users were trying to use their geocities web pages to host their images. Since I never did that I don't know how it worked but I know that geocities did not allow it. Thats is all I remember of the previous posts on this subject.

Any help would be appreciated. You can email me if you wish.

Thanks!!

You need to download a file transfer program to upload your pictures to your webpage. A good one to use is WS_FTP LE (which you can find at www.tucows.com or ZDNet.

You then put the requisite URLS either in the box on the listing form or directly in the auction itself. If you place them in the auction (the most attractive way of placing pictures), you will need to have some sort of clear gif in the box on the listing form to trigger the pic icon.

I like FTP Explorer. It is very easy to use. The interface looks just like Windows Explorer. In my experience WS_FTP LE truncates file names that are longer than 8 characters. This could be very confusing if you don't know what is happening.

I used WS_FTP a few years ago and found it confusing. I started using FTP Explorer also, and have found it easy to use and understand. You can even drag and drop files to upload them.

outoftheblue-- I have been using WS_FTP LE for three years and have LONG file names that have never been truncated.

I use cuteFTP

With your photo up on your site you can either put a link in your auction, or you can put the actual picture in your auction (IMG SRC=...) which will download into your description.

I prefer to see the photo in the auction and not have to click on a link.

CUTE FTP is known spyware. Type in "cute" at the following sites:
http://www.infoforce.qc.ca/spyware/form1.html
http://www.spychecker.com/

See also Spyware List:
http://www.alphalink.com.au/~johnf/dspypdf.html
Click on "The List - Index Page", then "C".

There are many other sites that document the same info.

Re: file name truncating

I've noticed that 16-bit program versions do the truncating, 32-bit probably don't. You could easily have an older 16-bit FTP version working within a Win-95 or newer OS.

Thanks everyone!

Now...can someone tell me what is "spyware"?

Is this a good or bad thing? I guess I have had my head in the sand because I have no clue as to what this is.

Spyware is not a good thing so avoid Cute FTP!

I host my pics on AOL. I tried ipix, but had to cancel the auction as it was not as good as AOL pics. Suggest you try your ISP. This is not my trading name.

In a nutshell ... many "free" programs such as CuteFTP attempt to recover costs by installing an ad component, whereby you must view ads to run the product. Even worse, some may also install a "spy" component, where your surfing habits are tracked and reported back to some site so that you will receive targeted banners, emails, or other stuff.

Where can I get FTP Explorer, and is it free?
I uploaded my images to "Photo Island.com", but can't find a way to link to them from my auctions. Guess it was a waste of my time to do all the uploading.
Or does anybody know how to link to them, or find the URL for an individual image?

heike55, if I understand your question, then it is exactly what I was trying to ask. I am going to try the above suggestions and I appreciate everyone of them.

Thanks, wbbell, for clarifying spyware for me. It doesn't sound like something I am interested in.

Thanks!

"I uploaded my images to "Photo Island.com", but can't find a way to link to them from my auctions. "

And you gave your photo a name. You make it appear in your auction by using HTML in your auction description like this:

(IMG SRC="http://photoisland.com/myname/myphotoname.jpg" )

I have assumed the URL for photo island (no space) etc. Replace the ( ) with carats < >. It will appear in your auction preview. Put the HTML where you want your photo to appear (top, middle etc). Learn basic HTML to do other things also.

OR if you just want a clickable link in your auction description (which I do not recommend) use this:

(A HREF="http://photoisland.com/myname/myphotoname.jpg" )click here(/A)

Again, replace the ( ) with < >

edited to put a space between " and ) to eliminate smiley face

My ISP provides a "Publish File" option on its site, allI do is tell it where the file is on my computer and hit "Upload" - Maybe your ISP has something similar?

I finally figured out how to use my browser to connect to my ISP ftp address and upload my pictures that way. No software needed, just the know how of the correct ftp address for my space, and my user name and password.

I am curious, since it is really easy, why more people don't do it that way? Once I am logged into my web space, I open Windows Explorer, and drag and drop the files directly. I lost WS_ftp in the reformat last month, and never got around to downloading it again.

Just found some more info on photoisland. This is not too great.
Here it is:
20. How do I link my auction site or web page to my PhotoIsland photos?

Here is how you can obtain the URL link information.

1.Click on the Photo Albums tab.

2.Go to the photo album in which the photo appears. (Note: If the photo does not currently reside in an album, you must first create an album and include the photo.)

3.Click on the picture you want to link.

4.Under Photo Options, click "Link for Auction, etc."

5.Highlight and copy (CTRL C or COMMAND C) the temporary link.

6.Paste the link into your HTML code or into the appropriate field (i.e. Ebay's picture URL field).

In order to keep your PhotoIsland account secure, links are temporary (3 months).

Heike, that is not a problem, see my post above, they seem to be simply telling you how to get the URL or address for your photo to put in the HTML code for IMG SRC, that is, what to put in place of where I said
