Hi Everyone,I came across this great antique widget today but I haven't got a clue what it is.
Any help with identification would be greatly appreciated.
It is made from copper and brass and is almost 14" long.
The width at the bottom is 5". It has a row of serrated metal teeth along the bottom edge and above them is a slim full width vent.
The hollow handle unscrews just above what looks to be a gas cock.
Would something else have been fitted to this when in use? What would it have been for?
I have been thinking along the lines that it is some sort of comb, but for what?
Wool, horse grooming, wig making?
The comb section looks to be brass so it wouldn't be substantial enough for paint stripping etc, which is what the guy who sold it to me reckoned it was.
Any clues will be gratefully welcome!
TIA.

Hi,
No clue, but thought I would bump it to the top before it goes off the board. Hope someone knows what it might be!

My husbands has seen one before, thinks it has something to do with combing and burning, perhaps horse grooming. He will think about it while he walks the dog, and if he comes back with any new insight, I'll let you know.

paulg added that the burning would cauterize(sp?) or seal what was being combed. He said all this, only seeing your picture and not your comments. Please note: we do not own any livestock (dogs don't count) but he remembers seeing this somewhere.
