Lately I have run into a problem getting a good supply of packing boxes. The drug store I was using now claims they need their old boxes for recycling. Apparently they get paid to recycle their boxes. What kind of store do y'all use? Or any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

I ship almost everything by priority mail so I can use their free boxes. But, I work in a department that receives alot of deliveries and the inventory guy will hold back the smaller boxes if I ask him to.

I get boxes from local retailers I know who received shipments.
My books ship in mailers reinforced w/cardboard. My small items ship Priority. And we cut the boxes down for anything that doesn't fit into those two categories.

I use regular boxes for bookrate and overseas or canada sales where you can't use priority boxes.
My daughter works in a convenience store and they get groceries twice a week and i take all the boxes i want.
the local dollar store has hundreds of boxes every week and i take those also if i need more.

Walmart. They even have them in buggies, broken down flat. It's up one aisle and pick some up, down another for more. All shapes and sizes, great for parcel post shipping. I just make sure all bar codes are marked out before shipping.

I buy overruns from box manufacturers locally. They'll sell the overruns cheap. They also heavily discount boxes which were ordered but never picked up by other companies.
Also a great local source for tape, bubblewrap, shipping envelopes & peanuts. They also give me their odd size pieces of cardboard which I use for packing or placing around objects.
One lets me roam through his "discontinued" room and I've gotten great bargains.

My husband and I recently came up with a much quicker method -- instead of marking out the bar codes, etc, we just turn the box inside out. Most boxes have one side seam that can easily be pulled open, and then it's a piece of cake to turn the box inside out and tape it back up.
We keep all of our boxes broken down, so we have to tape them up anyway -- this only adds a few extra seconds to the process.
And from the outside, it looks like a brand-new box -- no huge blotches of black magic marker.
We get most of our boxes at grocery stores, Walmart, and the dollar store. They always give us funny looks when we ask for small boxes, but there's usually a good selection, since most people want big boxes!

So far when I've asked at stores, I've gotten hugh sighs and a put-off: "try us Tuesday at 10AM..unless we don't have anything". Sometimes I find them at the grocery store and help myself [they are broken down and in a large box for recycling].
My usual source has dried up lately and I'm hurting, so may have to try again...the dollar store idea makes sense.
thanks -

I use the boxes I get for my purchases again when I can, USPS Priority Mail boxes when shipments are big enough, and Office Max for the rest. I haven't found a regular source for boxes yet. Most of my items go via bubble mailer or just in envelopes so its not a major issue for me (yet).

how do you prevent cockcroaches from making home sweet home in your home??
grocery stores boxes are the worst!!!
if your regular source is giving you the runaround like come back at 10.49 pm second tuesday of the week, they resent you taking these freebies and saving yourself money.
so once in a while patronise their business by buying something from them.

Hwahetc., "cockcroaches"? Sounds ominous.
Have been using Walmart boxes for some time, no bugs yet!
If the bugs find you, they find you. Whether the boxes are unused or used.
How about cockcrotches? Hmm--that may be a different thread.

For most stuff, Priority Mail
For other stuff:
Stationery/Office Supply Store
Bookstore
Gift stores -- lots of peanuts here!
Appliance Store: for big stuff, includes corner reinforcers when I'm shipping big tools
For items shaped like big framed paintings, a bicycle store -- these boxes are great!
Liquor store (not the best though)

Don't forget your video store, too. Blockbuster throws out clean, small boxes often.

From my forth comming novel -shiekofshabby
Back from the Sands of Overland Park!
On my fastest camel, Ralph, I raced the trash trucks, they pickup retail at night here, until I finally took the lead and in full stride plucked just the right packaging materials out of the local Rent-A-Centers bin. I then turned my trusty animal to face the large green truck and raised my staff pumping high saying "EBAY! EBAY! Startled they shut off thier engines, a signal they wanted no hostilities. I then slowly, regally, trotted by them boxes in tow and gave them my fiercest icy glare.
excerpt from my up coming novel
ADVENTURES IN THE EBAY DESERTS
Don't worry I have an advanced degree in cardboard box engineering from State of Mind.

Ditto for Uline.com, they have specials and a great search feature. You can enter the dimensions of the box you need.
