I need to vent a bit! This is the story, an auction closed with the high bidder (300+) feedback; the bidder takes almost three weeks to send payment. Ok, no problem, things happen. I ship the package via UPS the next day. Buyer received the package this past Monday. Now, I usually do feedback once a week - on Fridays, as I have a full time job and summer classes at the University.
Today, I wake up to check on my auctions and guess what I find - a negative from this bidder (my first one, I might add). What it says, and I quote, "great ring BUT WHY U DON'T LEAVE FEEDBACK???? bad bust for buyer!"
I didn't leave feedback yet. What would you do in this situation??

I think the neg was totally uncalled for. If they were happy with the merchandise, they should have "let sleeping dogs lie" and waited for feedback. I don't believe in holding someone "feedback hostage". A lot of sellers wait and only give FB on a weekly basis.
Why don't you neg them for taking too long to pay, and for playing feedback hostage?

I'd be inclined to reply:
"I sell rings, not feedback."
I got an email today nagging me for feedback, I hate that. I'm lucky to do it once a month, but it is optional and not part of what the success of the sale should be judged on.

I find that the more I sell, and the higher MY feedback becomes, the less I care about the whole thing. But a goodly number of my customers still have low FB, so while I don't get to it instantly, I always leave it. I would be crushed if I got a neg for not leaving instant feedback!

I also leave feedback once a week. I would give this person a Neg stating slow payment and would probably put something to the effect I leave feedbacks once a week. When I get a drag-butt payment I still give good feedback, but I wouldn't in this case.

I would certainly neg them and state that they were slow payers. Three weeks is ridiculous! I would have thought that the person flaked out if I waited that long for payment. I would say: You asked for it unreasonable & slow pay. Too many letters?

Thank you for your support, everyone! If it is one thing I learned from all of you, it is that the best way to respond to, or leave a neg is by being professional and unemotional. I probably won't do anything tonight, as I am still very upset about this whole situation. I like READER99's suggestion about saying: "I sell rings, not feedback." I think I'll use that one!
Oh, and I know a lot of sellers leave feedback immediately after receiving payment, but for the type of merchandise I deal with (high end jewelry), this approach would just be plain silly. I'd like to make sure that the buyer is satisfied with the purchase, as I do offer the option to return an item within a 10 day period. As soon as I find out that the buyer is happy, I post feedback; it doesn't matter if the buyer chose to post feedback for me or not.

That ebay buyer was totaly wrong in leaving you neg feedback after taking that long to pay !! Of all the nerve !!
He or she deserves to be negged back and to share with other sellers how long it took for payment to arrive ~
I never leave feedback until Buyer receives item and leaves feedback for me first ~ many will email me asking for it up front but I always tell them I want transaction to be complete and to make sure that they are happy with item. I assure them that i check my feedback often and will not forget them.
Never had any problems doing it that way !!
What a nutcase! Did you look to see if this bidder leaves similar negs to other sellers who dont run and leave her feedback? Just wondering. For someone with over 300 feedbacks she should know better. Give her a neg back, she deserves it....

I think the newest problem you have is which one of these great ideas to use in your negative response! Alot of them are great resonses. Make an impact they won't forget!

I just checked out her feedback record. It seems that she left 721 feedbacks, but received 334. That's a pretty low ratio of fb received vs. fb left, and I guess she took out her grief on me. Who knows, maybe she nags everyone about leaving her feedback, so some decide not to? She also has a few negs, one of which is "Buyer with unreasonable expectations. Hard to deal with." Seems pretty fitting!
She also handed out 12 negs herself, all of which are in CAPS with many exclamation marks... oh well, it's just another day in the life of an eBayer!
LOL And, you are absolutely right, TOYBUYER, my new problem is choosing among the great feedback suggestions offered! I'll definitely mention the slow payment though.

I too, like to wait until the transaction is totally complete. Now, if that was the first I'd heard about her recieving the ring, I might respond with somthing to the effect of,
"Oh, you recieved the ring, glad you like it"
As for feedback to her, NEGATIVE OBVIOUSLY! "Here's your feedback; buyer takes 3 weeks to pay and wants immediate feedback"
It's not a fun, but it's factual, also lets future buyers and sellers to know what to expect.

Annuta: I can understand your unhappiness with the Neg. My one and only was from bidder about 40 miles from where I live. Sold him the item, he paid via Pay Pal that night and Item was mailed next morning. He received the item on the next day and was very happy with the it, but since I did not Email and tell him the item was sent I got a Neg. Complete turn around from auctions end to when the buyer had the item was less than 48 hours. I am sure that many of the Negs which are left for different sellers are of the same types as yours and mine. I contacted a few of the Ebay people that I had email address's for, but never even got a reply.
I did leave a neg in return, but that really does not give you much satisfaction when they have a 1 feedback and I have a 1000. Leave them a neg and don't loose any sleep over it.

I agree with the other posters that the buyer is out of line and deserves a neg.
I would leave calm factual statements about the situation, rather than the fun sarcastic ones. Bidders read these comments and might be turned off by a sarcastic comment. For every bidder you turn off, you lose a customer and a higher final bid.
I would leave a response that says something like: Feedback is left weekly, based on the completed transaction. In their feedback, I would leave a negative like: Took 3 weeks to pay, left a neg because I didn't leave feedback fast enough.

ApplesOranges ~
I got a negative for the same thing ... I only sent him 3 emails ... end of auction, what is your address, and thanks for the payment and your item will be shipped tomorrow or the next day.
I got a NEG that says Will never buy from this seller again. I guess a rare D & D Map book at an incredible price shipped quickly is not good enough for him.
When I asked why he said it was nothing personal but he is in customer service and I did not email him after I sent him his package.
Of course, he waited a full month AFTER I left his feedback.

My one and only neg was for the exact same reason. They said I didn't leave feedback which isn't true. He had paid by personal check and I wait to leave fb on those. It ended up bouncing and I think he was trying to make my neg on him look like retalitory feedback.

Reciprocating with a neg gets down to this person's mud level. Block the bidder and leave "After waiting weeks for payment, you really don't want my feedback."

Return the favor, reminding them how long it
took for them to pay. Then smile! This is
far from the worst thing that could possibly
happen to you!
I've been there. I once had a guy leave me
a negative saying "He lied to me, I hate
this game" (it was a video game cartridge
sale). I never, ever tell people what games
they will or will not like. I described
the game properly, provided a picture of
the item, and stated "Tested / working"
because it had been. Mailed it on time, in
a well wrapped package and sent an e-mail
that it was on the way. I couldn't believe
what I got in return.
Good luck!

As much as this buyer would tick me off, I'd leave a dispassionate neg emphasizing that it took three weeks to get payment. I read feedback before bidding and if a seller is too flippant in his/her responses, I usually won't bid on that auction - I feel that he/she may be too quick to neg me or too difficult to deal with.

No matter what I hope you left her a negative back if anything to worn other sellers about her.
I once cancelled a bid of someone that had two replies in a row by different sellers that she left unreasonable negatives(they had already left her positives and could only leave a reply)- so I cancelled her bid and emailed her explaining I was afraid to work with her since I have never received a negative and she seemed to easily pass them out

I received one of those unreasonable negatives this summer also. I estimated a package to cost $8.00 priority mail, and the buyer said that I was trying to charge her for handling. She did pay, and it turned out that the shipping cost $8.35. I ate the extra shipping cost. I scanned the receipt and sent it to her, and placed insurance on the package to protect myself. She still negged me, stating that I charged more shipping than was necessary. I had left positive feedback, because she did pay immediately. She could not complain about the quality of the item.
I forgot to place her on my blocked bidder list, and she bought something in my last auction. She didn't complain about the shipping this time, but I am sure that she will leave some type of remark. I am not too worried about it though. The great majority of my customers are very, very happy with their items.
