How can I tell if the old napkin ring I have found is sterling silver, silver plated, or whatever. I am clueless. Thanks for advice!

Are there any marks?

If not it is probably plate.

Most European countries had laws regulating manufacture of silver objects (for tax purposes) and most craftsmen marked solid silver items in some manner.

Napkin rings of all sorts frequently are not marked because of the difficulty of putting a flat stamp on a rounded surface. I have seen plated, sterling, coin and continental with no marks. Or marks that look like decoration to anyone who hasn't seen a lot of marks. Could you tell us what this looks like? Usually the ones with full figures are plate, but not always. Napkin rings are really tricky. General rule: the heavier the ring, the more likely it is to be plated. Hope this helps, Dale [email protected]
