the first part kind of sounds like a browser/email app problem if you just redid somethink with earthlink.net. Did you have to pic a new password or did you pick a new user name? Sounds like the info is not there anymore. To get rid of the ALL THE STUFF NO ONE SHOULD OR BETTER WANT TO SEE... try turning View:Headers:Normal (In Netscape at least)...
I read it again and you need to trash the browser and install a new one with the proper settings...Then
Throw the whole computer away and buy a new one.
Maybe I'm missing something here though...
Wouldn't be the first time, I'm kinda slow. Maybe I just need to take my meds.
CRAZY
I agree

I NEVER LAUGHED ONCE AND BELIEVE ME, I HAVE CONSIDERED THE LATTER MANY TIMES. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ALL THE TECH TALK WAS. THANKS FOR YOUR VIGILANCE. HOWEVER I CHANGED NOTHING I FORMERLY HAD. WHAT EVER HAPPENED THEY DID IT ,NOT ME. IT HAS MADE LIFE ON HERE MISERABLE. I EXPECT A RUBER STAMP BACK FROM THEM ANY MONTH NOW.
I know exactly what you are talking about, and that is exactly why I no longer have Earthlink!
When I had Earthlink, it ran periodic auto updates. Every time it did, my computer messed up, and I would spend hours on hold trying to reach tech support. And each time my frustration level grew. I am usually a very patient person, but had reached my limit of having a substandard service for which I was paying.
Two months ago, the tech I spoke with - after finally holding almost 3 hours - walked me through on how to disconnect the auto updates. He said that I would need to run it once monthly and to make sure all other applications were closed. Last month I did just as he instructed, and he obviously didn't know what he was talking about.
So I called tech again, and was probably the most unpleasant person they have ever dealt with. The only thing I used Earthlink for was a connection - that was it. I used IE 6.0 for my browser and Outlook Express for mail. This tech walked me through completely removing all Earthlink software from my computer, and configuring a dial-up connection only. Made the service worse....
I still have one month remaining on my contract with Earthlink, and just paid them the month - don't want their service any longer. I had Roadrunner installed this week, and it is such a pleasure to have something that actually works - and works properly - for a change.
I want to reassure you - it is NOT you, NOT your email program, and NOT your computer. It is Earthlink.

I was on Mindspring, who bought out Earthlink, for over 3 years, and never had anything up-dated automatically; nor have I ever had to wait 3 hours on hold. At most, 10 minutes..., even after they took on the name Earthlink.
I admire your patience for staying on hold for 3 hours. You deserve a medal, and to be placed in the "Book Of Records"...
Actually, the longer I held, the angrier I became and had to take the frustration out on someone eventually! I have a speaker phone, and that particular night while I was waiting I cooked a full dinner, sat down and ate, bathed my child, read him a story, and tucked him into bed...
You are very, very fortunate that you have never experienced these problems! Hopefully you won't ever have to. I sell on eBay, and over the past three weeks I have had 5 different customers have email problems, and they were all Earthlink subscribers. Maybe it is a geographical problem...

I've used Earthlink for probably 2+ years now, and I love it! I've only had to call tech support once or twice, and even then it was something that wasn't Earthlink's fault. I was on hold for maybe 5-10 minutes tops, and both times the representative was able to take care of things.
I don't use the software on this computer, but do on my other computer. The auto-updates have always worked just fine for me.
Sounds like it would be a good idea to un-install, then re-install the software ... or just configure it in your dialer and use your own software.

I am on Earthlink and am generally pleased with their service. However, their popularity has resulted in some very long tech support waits. Several months ago I loaded up their software simply to get back online when I was having problems trying to sort through a correct configuration. It worked and I was fine again, but their software is kind of a dumb hog and I neither use their browser or email client. I made a fresh copy of the dialup connector and ditched Earthlink's software. My dialups are faster and I get reasonably decent bandwith for a dial-up. All the settings a user needs are available on their web site.

I'm on Earthlink and yes, their own software messed up my computer big time with the auto updates. My computer would not shut down, start up, etc. Seems Earthlink's 5.0 software was not compatible with Windows ME. Actually I do not use the Earthlink browser as it reminds me too much of AOL, only used it when I needed to get into my webspace to delete off auction photos. Took a day and did some heavy investigation into what was stalling out my computer and yep, it was the Earthlink auto updating in my startup. I finally uninstalled everything. Set up a dial-up networking connection for Earthlink, use IE 6 and Outlook Express and have had no trouble since. In fact, my computer runs much much faster with all traces of Earthlink's own software off of it. Their tech support have always been pleasant, but of no help. They are just reading out of a book! I actually got more tech support for this problem from the Dell Chatboards than from Earthlink!
Call Earthlink tech support and tell them you want to uninstall the Earthlink software and then set up a dial up connection. They should be able to walk you through it as it was pretty simple actually. Good luck!
