I sent a 'package' (manila envelope) to a customer on October 5. She hasn't received it yet, and I was wondering how slow the mail is going in New York at the moment. I don't know how close she lives to the city.
I was wondering if this is post office precautions or if it is lost. Opinions?

I can tell you that mail between UK and USA has major problems.

Outgoing doesn't seem to be a problem with Priority at this time. Things may have changed this week though.

I've had several customers in the New York City area buy after 9/11 and they've gotten their packages. I had one customer in UK get her package in 3 days, from Ohio. No complaints here!
{I'm probably going to regret saying that}

I have 2 sellers that are telling me the reason I haven't received my packages is because mail is slow.
Seller #1 I paid with Paypal on 10/3, Seller #2 I paid with Paypal on 10/11. Both are giving me the "mail is slow" excuse and neither of them are in NY (but I am). I'm beginning to think I'm dealing with 2 deadbeat sellers.
I've purchased over 30 items in the past few weeks with no other problems, and some of them WERE from NY.
As far as my outgoing packages - I've mailed hundreds since 9/11 and not a single problem.

I'm really starting to get worried about this. I've been selling full time for about 3 years, and this is my first lost package. I don't require insurance on low dollar ammounts (this was $10, but I don't require it until it hits $20, although many people want insurance on $2 items!)
In any case, I'm starting to be concerned about this, but there's nothing I can do. It was an out of print craft leaflet, and not replaceable.
I keep hoping it will show in the next day or so.

My worst batch of late/lost mail happened right after FedEx took over USPS's Priority Mail transportation. But I too have a package I sent to CA (from PA) not make it there yet and another guy that was sending me a money order from NY not get to me yet. With so many facilities experiencing interuptions in operations, I guess slower mail is to be expected. Heck, the postal workers are able to flag *ANY* package that looks suspicious so who knows how many legit packages are getting caught up in the red tape of investigations. All I can think to do is remind the buyer that the post office won't honor the insurance until the package has been missing over 30 days, apologize that their package didn't arrive in a timely fasion, and to contact me as soon as it arrives or after the 30 days so we can proceed with an insurance claim. After the fiasco when FedEx took over, I require insurance on all my packages to protect myself and the buyer. Might be something to consider since late/lost mail may only increase if these anthrax threats aren't brought under control soon.

I live in New York (Manhattan) and have
both shipped and received packages and
have noticed no unusual delays or problems.
Things have been back o normal for at
least a month.

Seems to be a real mixed bag right now...it either goes lightning fast or is stuck in never-never land for a while.
I mailed two packages about a month ago on the same day. The one to Miami arrived in 2 days. The one to Atlanta arrived in three and a half weeks. The customer in Atlanta reported that a number of items he had been expecting showed up all at once along with the Priority box I had sent him.
These are just two examples but I am experiencing this sort of result on a regular basis right now.
Give your seller's the benefit of the doubt.

I sent a package from Minnesota to Virginia on 9/11. The buyer still hasn't gotten it.
I used Delivery Confirmation, and of course it contains no information.
I sent it Priority Mail in one of their boxes so that should be fine.
The buyer has contacted his local post office and they have told him to continue to be patient.
I wonder if its because of the date I mailed the package is why its taking so long?

Sparatic at best. I mail either from my PO in Yonkers or if I miss that one I quite often use the 24 hour PO in Manhattan. Since 9/11 I've had most of my incoming and outgoing mail near normal, maybe a couple of extra days. But there have been several that have taken forever. I'm not sure if it is 9/11 related or just a bunch of gremlins but it is definately NOT totally normal yet. And with all the anthrax problems around the country I'm really doubt it will ever be what we use to consider normal but we'll just have to do the best we can under the circumstances.
