Ok - I don't deal in such things at all - but - I happened to be at a country auction and this print came up in a lovely antique frame. No one wanted to open the bidding. Being the adventurist I am I could not restrain myself from hollering "$5.00". No advance - sold $5.00.
I am contemplating listing this print on ebay and have done the cursory searches on ebay and the web and can find nothing - so I appeal to the experts lurking here.
What I have is print by Montague Dawson. It is titled "The Following Wind". It is roughly 20"x27" (not exact because it is framed).
The top says "Published in 1936 by Frost & Reed Fine Art Publishers, Bristol & London, England. Rudolf Lesch Fine Arts, Inc. New York. Copyright in all countries including the USA/Printed in England." The bottom says "Montague Dawson" at left and "The Following Wind" at right.
It is a lovely thing and it is [seemingly] in perfect condition having been framed (probably since day 1).
I have yet to take pics, but wonder how to best describe (it looks mint to me) and where to start the bidding. Any ideas?
Oh yes - one more thing - What is the best way to ship this - in the frame? If so, what is the best way to ship a frame that is like 26"x36"?

Here is what I do when I have something wierd, and I have no idea what it is really worth. Find the best catagory or better yet, find 2 catagories. Do the start at $5 (what you paid), and put in as many pictures as you can. Worst case is you lose $.50 if someone gets it for $5 plus shipping. When you have a very low start, a bunch of people check it out, and you are likely to get a nice fight between a couple of people who like it. Post pictures when you can. I would like to see it.

good advice but I would start at $9.99, double my purchase price.
as far as shipping, check with your local UPS office.
mine will pack an item for me for free if I wrap it in bubble wrap first. they shipped an antique picture just about this size and it arrived safe and sound.
they have plenty of boxes and peanuts at my local station from the other items they sell

I have done a little further research and found a few different titles of prints from this artist (also from Frost & Reed 1936). Retail asking prices are from $1200 - $3000.
If this is true then I made a great bargain. Do you still think I should offer this with a low start price of say $9.99?
Camera is not here, it is being used by a friend. Dawson was a painter of marine themes. The following is a similar print to mine (this one is Frost and Reed 1935).

Sure, what do you have to lose. You can link to the information site that told you what it was, and what the "retail" value was (as long as they don't sell it, or things like it). You will get value for something like that. You could also take something with that kind of value to a "real" auction house (sothaby's, butterfield's, so on) and put it in a real auction. That may be the way to go on this. I am not sure I trust ebay with a $3000 print.
