I guess eBay has nothing to worry about, because we sellers are just hooked on the eBay "brand".

Ebay better worry. The word is spreading and I for one am taking full advantage of the day. The last one I did very well and have done well since. I welcome some healthy competition to ebay.

You had better beileve Ebay is watching yahoo auction Yahoo just lowered its listing fees and this is its second free listing day in a few short weeks.
You can list 6X as much on yahoo for the same money you are paying Ebay if just 25% who try yahoo stay with it after they list on a free listing day in a short time this is going to be a big hit to ebay.
remember a good chunk of the buyers on ebay are as well sellers so as there sellers go so do the buyers.

Be careful listing on Yahoo. Remember if you save $.30 in listing fees but get $1.00 less for your item, you are worse off not better.
The best way to sell on Yahoo is forget the auction format and simply start the bidding at what you want to sell it for and set the BUY NOW price at the same amount. Buyers who like the price will like getting it now. Only with free listings can you start listings high and not feel the pain of the listing fee. Say "1st Bid WINS" in the description and even the morons will catch on. Price things reasonably and you'll likely get some sales. Don't be a 1 trick pony. Get many items to sell and you will soon be busy wrapping and shipping.

I sell on ebay and sometimes I buy - right now I'm looking to buy some memorabilia, so with all this talk of Yahoo, I decided to take a look at those auctions as well.
Plugging in the very specific keywords, I come up with all of 10 auctions on Yahoo. The same keywords on Ebay come up with 250. Upon further inspection, the 10 Yahoo auctions consist of only 5 different unique products while ebay's show an incredible variety from common to rare. 90% or more of the ebay auctions at least have one photo while only three of the Yahoo auctions have photos. The six identical items are posters and they don't have images - who's going to buy a poster from a description? Upon further inspection, the description describes the poster as being 7 by 10 inches! I guess they don't want to post a picture since anybody with a color printer could then make their own "poster."
So, as with my other forays into potential Yahoo biddership, I come away disappointed seeing nothing but junk and a few undistinguished low-end items that are also available on ebay. Since it appears that the best stuff is still being listed on ebay, I'll continue to buy and sell there. When I see Yahoo's variety approach that of Ebay, I'll be happy to make the jump.

holdenrex, you are contradicting yourself. You went to Yahoo looking for memorabilia (which is junk in my book), but said you come out feeling disappointed because all you found were "junk"?
You went looking for junk, found fewer junk as compared to eBay and was disappointed!

I don't see how holdenrex' words are contradictory. In fact, they reflect my own feelings after checking out almost every other second tier site out there. *You* are the one calling memorabilia "junk"--- I don't see it as that at all, my brother has a collection of 1960's memorabilia that is likely worth more than most peoples houses.

When I sell on Yahoo, it is exactly as zzyzx000 described - Use Buy It Now. Just not enough action to support an auction. Basically, I list the more unique stuff on ebay, and the stuff I have a lot of on Yahoo.
Free listing day is not that big of a deal to me, list 100 items and save $5? I may get a few things up there, but it is not like free listing at Ebay!

If you want YaHoo auctions to be more viable, start buying there. I made an effort to start buying there when eBay raised there prices again. YaHoo auctions is now my first stop when I am looking for an item.
I did notice that one category that I list in on eBay that didn't have the listings ebay did, but it did have many actual bids and items bringing higher prices than eBay. I will be listing there on Thursday.
We'll see.

springmoon, if you consider vintage memorabilia to be "junk" you really have no clue about the market. The type of memorabilia that I was looking for is exactly what relayerone was referring to - 1960s memorabilia, specifically in this case related to a tv show. I almost bid on some of this "junk" on ebay last week, except it went too high for me ($300 was my limit) . Keep in mind ebay was originally conceived to sell vintage Pez dispensers, which is essentially 1960s "junk, " some of which bring hundreds of dollars and a few have been known to bring over a grand.
Remember one man's junk is another man's treasure. My sales are based largely on buying what one person considers junk and selling to that other person that considers it to be a treasure.

Fine, whatever. The point is Yahoo has none of this expensive junk that I buy and sell.

yahoo has deadbeats and yahoo does not care if they are deadbeats, they just keep on bidding for fun, they could be teenagers spending their allowance.
time is also money, why waste time listing on yahoo and get no bids or dead bids.

I checked yahoo for an item and found 2, the discribtion stated that the seller would be gone over thanksgiving week, therefore would not be able to ship untill they return.
That indicates that the item was listed in Nov 2001, this is Jan 2002. Listing still on after 2 months and no bidder.
Same item on ebay would have been gone in a 5 or 7 day auction
no brainer, stepping over nickles to pick up pennys.

Just listed about 50 items on Yahoo for the first time. I cannot believe how bad the listing categories are. Even AW's storefront categories offer a wider range.

I agree completely about the categories on yahoo. None of my hot items even closely resemble one of their categories.
However, I am giving it a good shot and listing some very nice vintage items at Yahoo just to test the water. I am really disgusted with ebay raising fees when final prices are seriously depressed. Doesn't seem like a very bright move.

Just did a dutch on yahoo for 500 items -- I should be able to get at least 5 sales.
It still wouldn't bother me if I didn't get any sales. Afterall, eBay is very competitive and when you do have a good sales run, fees eat you up.
I will keep on listing on Yahoo for a long time.
