This mark is on the back of a vintage (I think) multi-colored plate. Any help with ID-ing it...and the pattern..is welcomed with THANKS!

Is this pottery or porcelain?
The decoration looks hand-applied. It also looks unfinished. Seems to be smeared in a number of places. Is there glaze over the decoration?
The mark may not mean anything, this could be a blank. It is not one I recognize.
Signed,
Mr. Melvin

this is not the beehive mark, and i doubt it is made by royal vienna of wien ,austria.
royal vienna precedes augarten and it is like meissen of germany, this piece is not a quality piece.
could be a cheap imitation, look how blur the mark is.

Variations of the beehive mark were used by different factories in Germany, Austria, France and Czechoslovakia to try to deceive the customer.

blueyes, kiara is right a lot of people through the years used that beehive mark. Your plate has early colors and yes you will find the beehive mark on a big variety of designs. Stopwhinning is wrong on this one. A couple months ago I sent a cream pitcher through a very good auction in Baltimore it had a beehive mark and showed a geometric design. It did well. I can't tell for sure if your piece is early from its photo but without handling it looks that way. Painters in the old days put any old mark that came to their heads when painting. Today that mark is called the beehive mark and the first place it is was used is Vienna.
On my way to the Baltimore auction I (for the fun of it) stopped at a "ANTIQUE MALL" in Maryland. I showed the gal at the counter a early Sevres figurine I had from the First Imperial Period. I said are you intrestered in buying this figurine? The Gal said "I will pay $5.00 for it and get $10.00". I thanked her but said I thought I could get a little more. At the auction it sold for $735.00. So you see you can't believe everything you hear especially from me.

bigpeepa,
an artist can use a mark which makes people think it is a beehive mark but it is not the same mark as royal vienna.
there are many cross swords mark out there, but it does not mean it is made by meissen.

Thanks, all...appreciate the help. The plate is porcelain...appears to be crudely handpainted over the glaze. As to the two black marks, I don't have a clue why they're there! Perhaps this was an apprentice painter and this was one of his/her "practice" pieces? So...how do I list it? Under Royal Vienna? I will certainly put a lot of "who knows?" in the listing as I don't want to misrepresent it. Thanks again...

blueyes, if the paint is over glaze don't call it Royal Vienna you will only have trouble after you sell it.

Thanks...OK...stupid question time. I'm not an expert...how can you tell if the design is "overglaze" or "underglaze"? The whole plate is "shiny"...including the designs.

blueyes lightly draw your finger over the paint. if its over glaze you should be able to feel the paint it will feel different than the glazed parts. Also take your finger nail and try to chip some of the paint off. Don't worry if a little paint chips off its over glaze and not much good anyway. I wish I could hold the plate I could better tell how old it is. I still say the colors look early to me. Check out Gaudy Dutch on ebay you will see what early paint looks like. Your piece is not as fine as some of those pieces but you will start getting a feel for early paint. I am not saying your plate is Gaudy Dutch but I want you to see early paint and colors. Like I said before this is just my thoughts and who the heck cares anyway HA HA.

Hi Bigpeepa...Well, I certainly do care what you think...it's obvious you know more than I do. I did run my finger over the designs and can definitely feel the difference...so guess it's painted over glaze. Thanks for the help...I'll check out the pieces you mentioned...Yes, I do agree, the plate/colors DO look old. Thanks so much!
