I just received my eBay invoice, and this is what I found on it
eBay International AG
Helvetiastrasse 15/17
3005 Bern
Switzerland

Swiss VAT Identification Number:xxxxxxx

I live in Canada, so why a Swiss VAT #?
I am not sure what is going on.

DO NOT - I repeat - DO NOT trust anything ebay sends you in the way of invoices right now. My account is so screwed up I can't believe it. According to the person I dealt with at ebay they have a minor problem with their accounting program right now and they are trying to fix it quickly.

QUICKLY???

I sent them an email on 4-1-2004 that there was something wrong with their accounting and they still don't have it resolved.

That's quickly??

Why not answer the email and tell them that you overpaid on your Swiss VAT account and you would appreciate it if they could mail your $5000.00 refund check without any further delay. I bet they would get the glitch fixed in record time

I still don't have an invoice and really want to clear out my paypal account - I think I'm going back to my old card.

Well, it's a relief to know it's not just me, I certainly don't need to be paying extra taxes! Especially to another country. Think I will report it to eBay just in case.

I forget what the V and the A stand for, but the T stands for Taxes. Many foreign countries tax online sales and ebay must report it to those countries Treasury departments. Then they also let the seller know how much it is.

Value Added Tax. It is the "value" you add to goods by them passing through your hands. I guess for lack of a better name it is a gross profit tax.

VAT = sales price - your purchase price, or cost of finished product if you manufacture.

The Europeans tax gross profit all along the commerce stream.
