For a couple of weeks, I've had problems with the search function and its continual looping. The pages keep refreshing. Well, I finally decided to email eBay and got their typical canned response. If they think I'm going to adjust my firewall or my AdAware program to allow their spyware access to my computer, they'll out of their minds. If bidders cannot use the search function without allowing spyware, it's no wonder sales are down. With the amount of money they receive from sellers every month, there is no excuse for this garbage.
Their canned response (I know it's canned because someone on another board got the same one I did - word for word):
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us with your concerns about the error that you're encountering when you try to browse on eBay. I'll be glad to assist you with this situation.
We have had many reports of members who are unable to access search pages that contain a Banner from Doubleclick.net. We are aware of this issue and have found that it's being caused by an ad blocking option
with certain Spyware or Adware programs. If you turn off this ad blocking feature or add Doubleclick.net to your list of accessible sites, the category pages will load without any further trouble. For
information on how to configure your program, please consult the help pages for that software.
Even if you do not have this type of program on your computer, your ISP
may have some software installed on their end which is blocking the information from getting to your computer. You may also want to contact them.
If you are not using this type of program and your ISP is not blocking these pages, you may still experience the issue if your security settings are automatically restrict certain types of banners. To add
Doubleclick.net to the list of allowed sites, please follow these instructions:
1. Click on the "Tools" button in your Internet Explorer toolbar.
2. Click on "Internet options" again in the dropdown.
3. Click on the "Security" tab in the pop-up window.
4. Click on the "Restricted sites" icon (red with a white dash).
5. Click on the "Sites..." button.
6. Type the following into the first empty field:
doubleclick.net
7. Click the "Add" button
8. Click "OK" when finished
9. Click "OK" again to exit the internet options tab.
When you have completed these steps, shut down all of your browser windows and open a new browser.
Thank you for your time in this matter. I look forward to assisting you again!
Cheryl

I will NEVER allow doubleclick on my Internet Security. But then eBay pages are much slower. Sometimes the AD banners on eBay pages take an eternity to load.
The only word that is on my mind is STUPIDITY.
It's like going to a supermarket and have to carry a 50 pounds cart full of advertisings !!

Cheryl you have the same firewall I do and I hate it. I don't think it is the adware as I had the problem before I installed it. Do you type sentences and not see what you typed before you are all done.
It might be the adware but I don't know. Everything on my computer is very jumpy unlike it was when I didn't have a firewall.
Maybe glass girl can come in and help us and give us some insite.

I hate it when I don't have a clue but I don't know what you are talking about? This is not a joke question I really don't understand the problem. If you don't mind explaining I really would like to know and do appriciate your time. Thanks very much in advance...

eBay is planting spyware on your computer via an outfit doubleclick.com. If you have inbound access denied for this spyware firm your IE will keep trying to display a banner that can't get through and it starts going into the display routine over and over. I don't even need to give you my overboard alarms going off opinion about this, it speaks for itself. To be unbiased it is currently pretty inoucuous, but the door is opened and it does invade your privacy. I usually run AdAware by Lavasoft after I do any research on eBay. PC Pitsoft also places cookies and you should do the same after visiting their, otherwise, excellent site.

I have worked in this area. In the early 70's it was about encrypting data and running real time encryption sequences in stand alone separate entities. Like remote piloted air drones and AWACS planes, for a developmental offshoot example. Read Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.
Just for lazy reasons we managed to put together a spare crypto-gear doomaflache just to have an extra to pop in in case one went down. Not to get real nerdy, but it had to do with the electronic tag on the shipping instructions. I also logged it in as received and placed in stock on our ship. Hey, somebody was accountable for it, screw-ups happen.

Hello
Welcome to the club. I have had problems with Ebay for MONTHS (about three) and all they do is yadda....yadda. My problem is my computer locks up on sellers who use Ebays pictures. On another thread I was told the pictures have embedded data and Win 98 don't understand and locks up.
I am NOT upgrading my computer for $100-200 so I can see their new and improved pictures.
Of course the seller is the looser also and most don't believe me when I tell them I cannot view their lots. My computer works well anywhere else.
Ah well just encourages me to do other things.

Cheryl...I am running Spybot S&D plus AdAware by Lavasoft and am not experiencing the problems you mention. I also have McAffe AV. I do not have a firewall, and do not want one. Most are poorly designed and cause more trouble than they prevent. The two or three that actually work are difficult to set up and expensive. I think Ebay is just trying to get you to let them install their tracking cookies on your computer. Shut down that firewall and see if that clears up your problem.

I shut down my firewall and all kinds of things get downloaded onto my computer. My popup blocker permits some popups to get through and I start getting spam mail. I use AdAware. I have a lot of sensitive information on my computer and that's the main reason for the firewall.
Right now, eBay is the only site causing me a headache. It doesn't happen all the time, though. When it does, the search function is useless. The page reloads over and over and over never finishing. What a PIA. I have my cookies disabled. eBay doesn't need to know what I'm doing and neither do their advertisers. If I want to do business with them, I am perfectly able to click on their ads.

For the past month, at any given moment, there has been one function or another that is not working properly on Ebay. They are constantly "enhancing" something. Most likely the problem is at their end, but if it were at your end, my prime suspect would be the firewall, and not the Adaware or popup blocker programs.

Jack..I don't know. I'm having the same problem tonight. Everytime I go to "My Ebay" sellers page, I get all kinds of red X's. I have to refresh 2 or 3 times to get rid of them. Maybe one of their enhancements is to make it an X-rated site

Hi all. Just wanted to mention it is my understanding that double-click, aveunue a, and the other big trackers arent all that harmful. Even here you have to allow tribal fusion to use vendio, and thats a spyware too. But they just collect data as surfing far as I know. But if that is still annoying enough to you, you can use a program like Ghost Surf. It routes your internet connection thru annoymous hubs and does all sorts of steath things to counter these spywares etc. I've found packets from sites I've never even heard of much less visited requesting my permission with it. Its really a good program Cheryl, you might want to try it, or look into it.
