Where the heck do people get the money> Any why would you spend 15 Grand to have dinner with that guy?

I'd love to have dinner with Rupert but that's more money than I make in 2 years. That's crazy.

If that guy showed up at my door, I'd call 911.
At least it's for a good cause.
But anyone who contributes $15,000 directly could take it as a charitable deduction. Wonder why the ad says that the winning bid isn't deductible - at least, in part - if the money is going to the charity?
Why wouldn't the auction qualify as a fundraising event?
Charities do auctions all the time.

yes, charities do auctions. However.... CBS is not a charity. You are paying CBS who is donating net proceeds.. subtract Ruperts fees, airline, hotel and transporation fees, etc and then CBS donates the remainder... and they get the tax write-off.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Anyone notice the winning bidder is supposed to provide the dinner?
All CBS is providing is his transportation.

Any way you slice it, CBS (or whoever is posing as CBS) is a 0 feedback Newbie. I'd make 'em accept escrow.

*Please only bid if you are using your confirmed Paypal address. If your address is unconfirmed, you will lose the auction and we will refund your money.
Well that's certainly plain enough.

Fenix -
That makes sense.
Sparkz -
Not only is it a zero feedback seller, the ad says they accept PayPal or wire transfers. PayPal can't exceed $10,000, and it's up to $15,600 now. No checks.
And a bank transfer has to be made within 48 hours.
There's an ID Verify logo, but ........

I suspect they would probably accept cash also. Especially if it were in small, unmarked bills and handed over in a dark alley at night. Look at their other auctions and see what a haul they stand to make in one week.

Hey, Sparkz
I just asked "live chat" if this was legit - the real CBS - given the wire transfer thing.
They informed me that it looked legit because they also take PayPal.
They suggested I contact the seller for more information, and gave me a link for a form for one of their "specialists."

Polly18pocket
dreamgirl18
They're both bidding on this auction and they also had dealings with each other.
Probably doesnt mean anything,just weird.

Rozrr,
Thanks for looking that up. It just looked funny for a 0 feedback, newly registered seller to have several high dollar auctions all close within a 5 day period. Their payment terms and the fact they mention nothing about the charity or themselves in their "me" page also looks funny. I would think any company that specializes in spectacular productions should have someone on staff that could set up an Ebay auction so it doesn't look like something that originated in Romania by a laptop seller. Then again, maybe all the spoofs and phishing expeditions going around are making me paranoid.

Hey, Sparkz
Check this: The auction has declined - from $15,600 to $14,100.
6 retractions by 5 bidders. 3 say "cannot contact seller." 2 say "entered wrong bid amount."
Japerton, I think this guy bears a resemblance to Charles Manson.

I don't know. I wouldn't mind having him over for dinner. My Rottweiler would probably enjoy a change of diet.

Hmm ... dinner menu for survivor ... worms, grubs and unidentified roots. All in a bowl, no flatware. Water from the ditch in the backyard. Make him compete with family members for a seat at the table.
Edited to add: I wonder if there have been questions to seller. If so, they have opted to omit them from the auction.

This is a real auction to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. I saw it on CBS News yesterday morning.
It caught my eye since I met Elizabeth about 18 or 20 years ago right after she had her daughter. She was the wife of Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky & Hutch). She received a blood transfusion while pregnant with her daughter. She & her daughter both died of Aids. She was a tremendously strong woman who lobbied intensively for a cure for Pediatric Aids right up to her death.
