don't you love the blurb on the other page?

"Sales Manager Gets a New Name
With the release of Sales Manager Inventory Edition, Vendio has re-named the current Sales Manager service to Sales Manager..."

I need mslucy's dizzy happy face for that one.

Anyway, I can't remember who was talking about it - but what was it about the grey (or is that gray?) background that is photo correct or is the correct color for photographing where your whites come out correct? Does this make better sense than the VD phrase above?

I'm going to have to get a new background. This is the first time I've tried to take auction pictures since we moved in and I don't have enough light damnit! I guess I'm going to have to install an overhead light. But the grey background actually sounded like it was what I need.

So what color grey/gray is it?

I can tell you right now that butcher paper doesn't work.

Hi Glassgrl,

I hope one of our resident photo experts comes along with the answer.

Correct color is one of my toughest problems. I take my pictures in filtered daylight from south and west windows. The photo platform is angled in the corner. I still have trouble.

At least I can help a little bit!

Without the stars, of course.

Lucy

Edited to add: Newsprint isn't working for me. Goes yellow. Very frustrating.

An 18% grey background is actually what most photographers use to get accurate light readings. A controlable light source is also important. Depending on the types of lights you're using, you may need to adjust the white balance settings on your camera. Hope that helps!

I nearly always shoot on pure white background paper. Having one "kind" of light is useful, but unfortunately I have daylight, daylight balanced bulbs and tungsten bulbs all coming together. Setting WB each time lighting changes (for example, morning/noon/evening) is important -- luckily on my camera it takes all of 5 seconds.

The 18% gray card is for setting exposure in "normal" situations. However, if you're doing a high key photo on white paper, you really should use a live histogram in your camera. Expose for the highlights (i.e., don't lose them) and the shadows will take care of themselves 90% of the time -- unless you're photographing suede items, in which case "you can't get there from here."

Good luck!

it just seems like that 90% of the things I photograph have white in them, and when I try to take out the background, a white board against white doesn't work. I was thinking the gray would be a good alternative.

I do see some backdrops on Ebay at a good price however.

I'll have to work on the light situation. It's just hard when you're so used to working with one light source to switch to another. I was using overhead florescent in the kitchen. I thought my ebay room would be bright enough but the flash keeps going off.

glassgrl -- Going on my art training, a blue background would make white whiter. In other words, if you use a red lipstick with a blue tint to it, it would make your teeth look whiter. I'm wondering if the same thing goes for photography?? ...

I try so many different things to get a good picture that I can never remember what worked best!

I love the photo you posted though. It makes that lucite lamp look like fine crystal.

This is hard because it casts color, whatever you choose, through the object.
I know PS will have the chops to answer this one, I await the sage...largely because if it can be done in PS Elements...I am on board!

I was told by a TV engineer that a medium blue works well. I tried it & have been using blue for almist everything. I have a glassed in porch which faces East. I get perfect light unless there are really dark clouds.

I use 2 backgrounds. Both are felt. One black and one light blue. A yard of each is cheap, and easy to work with.

ltray; What should I say to MsLucy Re: abelskievers? Have I posted something in regards to them? I have one on eBay right now. Just bought a whole chest full of WWI uniforms. One Twill pants & jacket, one wool P & J, a pair of leg wraps, belt, cap & wool top coat. All were stored in a sealed box since 1930. Really in good condition considering at least 86 yrs. old.
