The last 2 times that I have attempted to run Spybot, my computer has shut down in the beginning of this process. Do I have a virus already? Any hope for my computer? At least once or twice a day, while working, my computer will just shut down on its own.
I hope that someone can give me some advice or guidance with this problem.
thanks,
Rosanne

Seems like Glassgirl had a warning about this. I'm sure she is asleep right now, but I'll email it to her so she can give you an update in the morning.

You downloaded the wrong version. Go to http://www.downloads.com. Search under keywords: spybot search. Find the free version and download that one. Uninstall the one you have and install the one you download.

I am currently running version 1.3 on my computer with no problems. I use it on all the computers at work doing just what I explained above.

Here is the link for the free version:

By the way, there is supposed to be one that is better than spybot combined with adaware but I haven't tried it yet so I don't recommend it either yet.

I'm afraid you'll have to download and run HijackThis for me.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/

run it, and choose "save log" copy and paste your results here.

Hijack is is a great utility. HOWEVER, it should be used with caution. With spybot s & d, you can undo what has been done by spybot. with hijack, there is no undo anything. You could loose your operating system. Here's the URL for info and download on it: http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10307556.html?tag=lst-0-1#cnetReview

"The program installs into whatever directory in which you unzip the file, which can make it hard to locate. Don't check off an item and hit the Fix checked button unless you're sure it's malware, though--you can do damage. HijackThis is a serious tool for any user who needs to root out a serious infestation, but wield it with caution."

Since we are talking about Kewel untilities. Here's one more we use at work. It's free. If your virus scan isn't gettting the bug out of your computer but it's been identified as one of the viruses on the site's list, run Stinger (It's free) afterwards use your virus protection program. Here's the site link: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ [ edited by paloma91 on Dec 20, 2004 07:38 AM ]

Morning All,

Thank you Whining, Glassgrl, Itray and Paloma. I have just started to read and contribute to this board where I remembered that there were a few people who were very knowledgable about computers. I myself know at least a little but not much. My son generally helps me with computer problems since he is a wiz but he is out of town on business and I didn't want to bother him.

I will definitely download the other Spybot. I thought that I had found that info on this board when I originally downloaded it but I guess that I could be wrong. I do have adaware and use it religiously lately but when I attempt to use Spypot, it shuts down.

Thank you all again,
Rosanne

It might help to download these programs/utilities and burn them to a CD as they are from their download and in their uninstalled form. That way, if you ever need them, you'll have them. If your computer is so messed up that it won't work, atleast you will be able to repair the problem with as little stress and time as possible. - - Just a thought - --

What operating system are you using? It sounds like Windows98.

{{sigh}}

Paloma - I know you mean well but the sky is NOT falling. There is a backup feature of HJT. You should always make a backup before you run anything you run/install on your computer.

I need to see what is running on their computer. HJT is the only way to do that without being there in person. It is NOT harmful to run the program in itself.

mamachia - the OTHER Spybot?

For myself, I don't download anything unless it's directly from the site itself. If you put Spybot into google you will come up with umpteen forms of adware/spyware sites that try to lure you away from the "real" Spybot site.

For spybot - it has to have Safer-Networking in the url.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

If you'll run the HJT I'll see what I can see.

Hi Glassgrl,
I have WindowsXP. As far as the Spybot, I thought that I found that info on this board plus Adaware. I think that I might wait until my son returns to try to solve this problem.
thank you all again,
rosanne
