Yes, I woke up today, checked my Paypal account, and was amazed to see it with such a large balance. I scanned payments and saw one for $1009.95. I checked it. They paid $9.95 for the shirt and $1000 for shipping. My posted shipping rate is $5.00, so I'm a bit perplexed as to how they entered in $1000 and then confirmed it. I plan to refund it when I finish reviewing the rest of my payments, but find it funny. It makes up for all the bidders who try to short me on my shipping rates. I suppose I could buy a first class plane ticket and deliver it in person. lol.

They either made a serious keyboard error or it's a phoney payment. Proceed with caution.

Wow, the most I ever had was someone who overpaid by $15. In the auction I stated that if they use the BIN, shipping is free, otherwise it's $15. As it happens, the person used the BIN and also paid the $15. Could have kept it, but I didn't feel right about it, and he might have noticed it later.
But $1000 for shipping! Wow, must have been a type-o. I'm sure he or she will notice!

i would have noticed it right away. I'm not sure how it could be a typo for $1000. I charge $5.00 for s/h. I could see if it was $500 or $5000, but $1000 doesn't make much sense. Either way, I will refund it, but I do find that odd. The irony is that last week I had a seller who accused me of being a scam artist, though I have almost 4500 positives and a 99.2% rating. I would think a scam artist would have taken the $1000 and run.

Maybe it's a belated Christmas gift from a very generous buyer who is still feeling the Chrismas Spirit!?
Would you please send this buyer my way? I want customers like that.

He or she must have been pre-occupied with something else. That's all I can think of.
When I was younger, I used to deliver pizzas, and I came to this lady's place, her order was something like $21.50 and she handed me two twenty dollar bills. I figured she'd want some change, so I started to count it out, and she said "oh that's ok, you can keep the change."
I said "are you sure? Really?" and she replied "Yes" and took her food. She looked kind of pre-occupied. Either she was very generous or wasn't paying attention. Maybe she thought she handed me a $20 and $5 bill and intended me to keep the change from that.
But that $1000 payment for shipping is just weird.

I'd write them back and thank them for the telepathy. Tell them you had planned to up your postage to $1000.00 but hadn't gotten around to it because of the holidays.

Be careful. It could be like the "Nigerian Scam." You refund the payment, they suck out the cash from PayPal at the same time they do a chargeback. Bingo your money is now gone and guess who is holding the bag? If its a new account it may have been set up just for that purpose. How would you get your money back if the Paypal account is closed or the bank account attached to it is closed.
I would contact customer service first before making any refunds.

If it goe to Virginia, it's probably a U.S. Senator. Most likely a member of the Senate appropriations committee, and using a government credit card. If it were coming out of his own pocket, he would ask you to send it media mail.

Hi Rusty,
I believed that this exact situation may have happened to friends of mine who sell on Ebay also. They haven't given me the details but they were very upset a few weeks back because they were ripped off of $3600.00. When I asked questions, they became agitated so I didn't pursue it until maybe later time.
It would be awful if this is what happened to them since they only accept Paypal these days.

Greengate is on the right track here.
What you need to do is refund the full amount and then send a bill for the correct amount. Have them resend the correct amount that way.

It was problably an honest mistake.
I'd reverse the payment, and send an invoice for the correct amount.

I emailed them yesterday and sent a partial refund for $995. Their address is confirmed and the item was only $10, so I'm not so worried about it. I haven't received any responses back, so I will do a info request and try to call them. It is odd.

Well....it's too late now, but I think you made a mistake by issuing the partial refund. I file this under the "it's too good to be true" column. I suspect a fraud of some sort which we haven't heard of much as yet. If it was me I would have kept the funds until I heard from the buyer. And only issued a refund after speaking to Paypal about the whole situation. At this point, I wish you luck and hope that all turns out well. Not that it will do much good at this point, but have you checked the buyer's purchases lately. If there's lots of purchases(more than usual from the bidder) like your's in the recent past that would raise some more red flags. Do let us know how things turn out.

Sending a partial refund of $995 could be a huge mistake. I hope I'm wrong, but you could be at risk for a chargeback. If the $995 refund hasn't been accepted yet, I would cancel the refund payment immediately.

It shouldn't take too long for the buyer to realize their error & ask for a refund or take a chargeback.
