I had lunch with a friend whose wife sells on Ebay. She owed Ebay something like $52.89 for her monthly charges, but $5,289.00 was taken from her bank account. It's taken her a couple of months to get her money back and in the process Ebay told her that they've outsourced that part of their business (!!!) to India and weren't responsible for what THAT company over THERE had done. She had to get a lawyer before it was all over. Gives me the creeps.

eeekkk !! Thats another good reason I changed my e-Bay payment to my Paypal account. It never has much more than 30.00 in it so they can't over charge me and it keeps them out of my bank account.

No way would I ever give Ebay access to my bank account, either through a direct withdrawal or a debit card. You have absolutely no protection against a blunder or fraud as in the case described. Your only recourse is to hire an attorney and hope he can spur them into action before the expensive process of litigation begins. For 5 grand, you can't afford to sue them, and they know it. Any bank worth the powder to blow them to hell will gladly issue a credit card to a customer with a low limit, say $500.00 or whatever you expect your highest bill to be in one month. Post that card with them for their fees. If they screw up, you have recourse and don't have to pay some crooked ambulance chaser.

The friend's wife was new to Ebay selling, unfortunately, and didn't know the things some of us here know. She'd borrowed $6,000 from one of her husband's accounts, but when she went to withdraw $50 at the ATM, she was told she had only $17 left in the $6,000 account. I know--it sounds screwy--but Ebay novices learn the hard way, I guess.

eBay can debit our bank account but only in locales where there are strong banking safeguards against unauthorized withdrawals i.e. not the US. Where a mistake is made such as with the OP, then the debiting party is required to make good in full plus interest within 7 business days of notification (according to the banking code),

My bank would have been on eBay very quickly. They have before. When eBay doubled dipped once, my bank got my money back for me. I've used a lot of banks in my lifetime, but Charter One is the one I'm sticking with.

Glad to hear the money was returned. What a fiasco. India? Are you kidding me? Oh, well, I guess we must remember that outsourcing is good for the US. We've been told that by the highest of authorities. LOL! Ya, right.

Toasted - using paypal for your ebay fees can be a nightmare too, so be careful.
I think I will pay my balance today with my paypal credit card and drop my bank account from ebay. It just occurred to me that I have overdraft protection and if something like this happened to me, I would be out of luck too!!!!

Wrong. If your PayPal account doesn't have enough, PayPal will dip into your checking account. So ebay will screw you either way. If you use your Discover Card, you will have over charge protection plus true cash back. Then all you have to do when ebay screws up, is call your credit card company and poof, things will get straightened out.

No they won't. They will deny the payment. Been there, done that. PayPal can not dip into your checking account any longer without your okay. We've had this discussion before.

Thanks all I just wizzed over to my ebay account page and paid with paypal... which I always do but had not done so yet this month.
What a horrible word "outsource" The Nation of India was starving in the 50's and I had to eat everything on my plate because they were starving .. now they are controlling our ebay accounts, and a billion other things. And half of this nation is over weight because they were starving! I hate that word and practice!
This makes me sound very cruel and heartless... I'm not.. but I do not like this nation outsourcing jobs.

I would not let one Ebay employee ruined Ebay by saying the function has been outsourced to India,so they are no longer responsible.
Ebay has hired a lot of newbies and they are cocky as hell, but they dont know much.
Given the fact your friend's wife is new to Ebay,it could be a case of the blind leading the blind.

There are plenty of banks that still offer free checking with low or no minimum balance. I have used one of these since I started with eBay and the only thing it is used for is eBay and PayPal. I transfer PayPal funds to this account and remove what does not need to be in it right away.

It just makes sense not to allow them access to a major bank account. I have a free account set up for paypal transfers, as soon as the money is in there, it gets put in my main business account. No way ebay, amazon, any of these companies are going to have access to my main business account.

I pay with a credit card that I use only for eBay charges. If there is a discrepancy, all I have to do is notofy the credit card company & they will take care of it. So far no problemsin almost 9 years.

I think it is best to pay ebay manually with paypal. Doing so forces you to stay on top of exactly how much money you give to ebay every month.
