I am wondering about the ever growing cost of doing business online. I accept paypal for auctions and have been very happy I added that service. Lots of people pay with paypal immediatly... right! I also accept cards through my bank for shows and the shop. This costs me $20 per month OR a percentage which is lower than paypal. I am wondering if I should drop paypal and go strictly with my bank acceptance. Does anyone have personal experience with this issue or thoughts? With the problem we all experience of people not reading the TOS is it worth it? Does someone who only takes "bank charge cards" need to put that info in the auction template at the top of the page? ....

mos ebayers like the convenience of paypal, they can go to their paypal account and pay all their sellers in one setting.
They also dont like to give out their cc data to an individual seller on ebay .

I think that you find resistance from buyers giving you credit card numbers as they don't want to have a theft. They are comfortable with P/P as it is a secure transmission.

Sanmar has it right, most buyers want to use paypal - I know that I do when I win an auction. I also have a merchant account, and advertise I accept credit cards, yesterday I received two credit card transactions, and well over 100 paypal payments...I'd never keep the merchant account if it weren't for my consulting business, where the numbers are the other way, most pay me via credit card so it pays to keep it.

100% wrong. As long as your customer can call you directly on the phone, they gladly will use the credit card. I have always had in my TOS that PayPal non-credit card payments accepted and credit card accepted directly to my merchant account. 75% of the buyers use the credit card and growing. about 20% still use PayPal, but that number is declining. The other 5% is cash, check ect and that has stayed consistant at that number.
The biggest advantage to a merchant account is you do not get charged for accepting checks or cash where PayPal will charge you for it.
Pretty soon, when PayPal's new stupid policy goes into effect that you have to accept credit cards, PayPal is going bye bye. We did the numbers and simply put, PayPal is not needed and should be dropped.

On auction sites like eBay, most buyers seem to prefer PayPal. On the other hand, we have web sites and use a secure cart system, and people are seldom hesitant to use their credit card through a secure system. We have many customers call in their credit cards for purchases made on eBay, and some niche auctions we post on.
The way PayPal is going, I would not consider giving up my Merchant’s Account, as one never knows when they may want to drop PayPal
Just my opinion.
