If you all remember, I had a dispute with a seller that sold me a pattern book with a page missing. I received notification from Paypal last night. It said that a full refund will be issued once the books are sent back to Paypal in their original condition. Does this mean that my refund is coming directly from Paypal and not the seller?

when you file complaint with paypal,if it is a large amount in question,Paypal will withhold that amount from his account pending resolution .
In your case,I recall you said it is 34 dollars,so I doubt Paypal has withheld any.
When you return the item to the seller and report to Paypal the online trackable DC number,Paypal will attempt to take the amount from his account and return it to you.
sometimes the seller may not have enough fund in his account, then you will get whatever he has at the time.

I'm not supposed to return it to the seller -- I'm supposed to return it to Paypal. Paypal said that upon receipt of the item in original condition, it would refund my money in full. That's why I *think* the refund is coming from Paypal and not the seller.

did you take out paypal insurance?
if you did, then it would be returned to paypal, not the seller.

No, I didn't take out insurance. Yes, paypal gave me the address to send it back to them and it is their address.
