Recently came across a number of old postcards. Do collectors buy ones that are used, written on and mailed? They are from the 30s-40s a few older. Also have maybe a dozen that are photos of people transfered to a postcard are these collectible or junk?

yes, collectors buy postcards that are used, written on and mailed. in an ideal world, all postcards would be "near mint," but this isn't an ideal world. it depends a lot on what the subject matter is. for example - a postcard of the washington monument, it doesn't matter if it's used or "near mint," it probably ain't gonna sell because millions of them were printed.
"photos of people transferred to a postcard"...those sound like real-photo postcards and yes, they're collectible but again depends entirely on the subject matter and overall condition. people who are identifiable as to name and location are much more likely to sell than those where you don't have a clue as to who they are or where they're from. also, real-photo postcards of people at their occupations are collectible.
hope that helps somewhat. caveat - the listing of postcards is quite well, tedious, as i'm sure neglus will tell you as well.
