I sold a very heavy item, it's going to weigh in excess of 40 lbs. packed. In the auction, I had "ships to U.S." checked and no other countries, but didn't specify that in my TOS. Auction ended sunday. Winner is in England!! In using the usps estimator online, I'm coming up with postage costs of between 89 and 215 dollars. The item sold for 202.00.

I've emailed the buyer twice and haven't heard from him, I think he may be chickening out, I hope he is anyway, as the next bidder in line lost out at 200.00, and he's right next door in CA., I'd like to send a second chance offer and not have to fool with a foreign shipment. How long do I have to wait before making the offer if I don't hear from the winner? Is the three day thing a rule, or more of a guideline?

What would you do?

I would email the underbidder and let him know you are having problems in contacting the winning bidder and ask him if he's interested if the transaction doesn't go through with the winner. That way at least you'll have him waiting in the wings and know how far to go with the winning bidder.

I would give him 7-10 days, unless your t&c says otherwise - sometimes they don't answer and just haul off and send payment.

You CAN cancel this guy's purchase, IMMEDIATELY by filing RIGHT NOW for your FVF credit!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT 7 DAYS!

Why, pray tell?

Because you CHECKED OFF "USA" for "countries I ship to" in the listing & the buyer is in MERRY OLE ENGLAND!

FILE on him & use the box: "wants shipping to country I don't ship to"

I've done this at least 5 times & the credit is instantaneous!

Well, then ya get a CHOICE!

I also get the "registered in ELBONIA, but want the item shipped to Intercourse,PA," and I usually still just file on them PLUS turn it over to eBay -- this often is a Romo scam bozo in Transylvania!

I agree with caroline, contact the second high bidder, tell them the high bidder is unresponsive to emails and if they would like it before relisting?

Maybe word it that after the auction starts you would be unwilling to stop it at that time.

My TOS states USA only. I sold a widget to a guy in S. Africa he paid in US dollars cash & I shipped to Las Vegas with no problems.

Seconding tOMWiii point that it was a US only auction and unless the Boston tea party never happened then the USA is a different country than the Motherland aka UK. (US currency still has dead presidents and not live monarchs?)

Sounds like second highest bidder is the way to go...

Tried canceling his bid, can't be done after EOA....looks like I gotta wait till the 30th...who in their right mind is going to pay 200 dollars extra to have a 200 dollar item shipped?? Bet that's why I haven't heard from him.

you can do something with the non paying bidder file a claim is not in this country or shipping area cancels the auction and fees.
The risk you take is the back up will probably not come thru for you either, you can now give them a second chance offer(back up bidder), and wait 24 hours and you will have to relist and hope it goes for that much again.

If your desperate throw in a buy it now price and hope for the best. Then block the turkey that cannot read. P.S. I had this whole experience on an item last month it worked out OK eventually time does that.

I've paid nearly as much for international shipping as I have for an item. Not sure what the item was that you sold - but if it was rare or a difficult item to get, maybe it was worth it to him.

I usually don't have any problems with English bidders - they, along with the Japanese, are my favorite international buyers.

The item is a home grain/flour mill that's no longer made. It was one of the best home stone grinding mills that could be had. It's in almost perfect condition, and cost 3 times what it sold for at auction. Having said that, there are several home flour mills made now that are it's equal, and they can be had for less than this auction plus shipping. At least one of them is made in Europe and should be readily available in England. As this is not some decorative kitchen gadget, but a heavy, useful tool, If it were me I wouldn't see the sense in paying double the auction price when I could get a brand new mill for the same money or less... but i'm sort of a cheapskate by nature.

Not right away I can't.....gotta wait till the 30th. It's not a huge deal and I'm not desperate. My main concern is feedback..I have 100% positive, but so does the buyer.....I only decided to sell this thing because we already have one and I got it for nothing. I'll keep it for parts or to replace my own if necessary.

Maybe I should add the most expensive shipping level, which is 215.00, and invoice the buyer. Maybe that'll goose him to get in touch...

prof:

There are TWO boxes you have to answer:

The TOP box gives TWO choices: BUYER didn't pay /or/ mutual agreement...

THE 2nd box has a bunch of choices:

You HAVE to click the CHOICE: "Buyer requests shipping to a country I don't ship to"

If you click THAT choice, the FVF credit is INSTANT & the process ends!

OK, so I invoiced the buyer at the highest estimated shipping, which effectively doubled his cost, and today he sends me this:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you to make payment for the grinder. I have bought the item for a friend of mine using my e-bay name and site as he was not available at the time to make a bid. He is serving with the US Forces over here in the UK. The item can be sent through the US Post Office. Could you please let me know the cost of postage to
*NAME DELETED*
PSC 47 BOX 16,
APO AE 09470
I await your return mail with cost of postage to the above address and will then pay via PAYPAL. Thanks Peter

Does this make any warning bells go off for any of you?

thanks again for all your input..

at the USPS website, for a 40 lb. package to that zip code, it shows (for me):

I'd insure it and ship on payment. Rates to APO addresses are same as domestic mail. I ship to enlisted personnel frequently with no problem.

OTOH: you cannot get DC with an APO address, thus, Ralphie does not accept PayPal for these addresses

OTOH: yer risk tolerance may be greater than Ralphie's, as he is a big WUSS!

estatesale..I wasn't able to figure out how to use the numbers in his address to get an accurate estimate. It kept telling me that zip codes had to be numerical only. Yes, I was doing international..what was I doing wrong...also, it's going to be more like a 55 pound package...

His friend is either in the Air Force stationed in the UK or your buyer has figured out a way to get the item with cheap shipping.

It's handled the same as shipping a priority mail package to zip code 09470 on the east coast. The only difference will be you have to fill out a customs form to go with it. You will insure it in the normal manner but don't waste money with delivery confirmation. And heed Tomwii's warning about accepting Paypal.

prof, just what ^ sparkz said.

Figure it up under domestic (not international), for zip code 09470.

Morning:

Perhaps you all read too many horror posts. This is a GRINDER -- not an expensive piece of electronics, jewelry, precious metals, etc. which tend to be more prone to scams. Anyone who buys one of these is probably quite legit since it's hardly a hot commodity (unless you need one).

Just about all my European customers take their time about settling for their purchases or contacting sellers to start with. Not everyone spends their life on line, after all (except us who post here -- mygoodself included).

Pack it up, figure postage, collect your payment (you may want to tack on enough handling to cover cross-border transaction fee) send it on, insure it, and relax. Since you will be insuring it, and filling out customs forms, that should be proof of shipping.

JMHO.
